I was prescribed Buspar almost two full months ago. My dose has been 10 mg twice a day since that point. Nothing has changed in my dose amount. Recently though I have been struggling with nausea, upset stomach and some diarrhea. I wouldn't think this drug would cause this at this point, but I am not sure what else it could be either.
Anyone have any idea??

Hi bethann-
It takes Buspar a while to build up in your system. It could be a side effect from the Buspar. You will not know until you either reduce your dosage or stop taking it. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms and follow any advise or suggestions.
Hope your symptoms subside soon :)
Thanks! Before I do anything too drastic, I am going to start a probiotic and see how that goes. If I still am having issues I am going to have to try and figure out what is going on. Hopefully it is not this medicine causing my issues. It has actually helped me :)
Bethann: You mentioned in your question that you developed nausea, upset stomach and some diarrhea. You say you don't think buspar would cause this at this point, and I agree with you. Ask your doctor about your symptoms. If it has anything to do with the buspar, the problem could be remedied with something as simple as a dose adjustment, as I mentioned in my last comment. Good luck and keep posting and let us know how you are doing!
My doctor told me that anxiety alone (not including any typed of medication) can cause the same symptoms of nausea, upset stomach, and diarrhea. I thought I had a 24hr. stomach bug, but my doctor said it was anxiety causing my stomach problems, and put me on buspar, and it really helped my anxiety, which gave me relief from my stomach problems. Also, the probiotic keeps the good and bad bacteria in your gut in balance so you have better digestive health.
That's why I suggested a dose adjustment before you give up on the buspar. "G"
Do you take a probiotic? Changes in your diet? Do you have more stress going on?
Btw is the buspar working for you? I just started taking it a week ago 10mg twice a day just like you. How long before you saw a difference? Thanks!
I start taking Buspirone five days ago! It made me so sick I end up in ER! I did a lot of research you cannot take probiotics with this medication also some vitamins and you have to make it sure if you are under the care of other medication there is no interaction! It may be works for some people but for me it was a nightmare! Good luck
Hi Hope:
Sorry to disagree with you, but I DO take Buspar, along with Probiotics, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D3 and a multivitamin/multimineral, and I feel the healthiest that I have felt in years. Maybe you had something else going on that sent you to the ER. There are no adverse interactions listed with taking Buspar and probiotics together. Buspar is one of the safest medications on the market for successfully treating anxiety. There is no reason for it to have an adverse interaction with probiotics at all.
You can disagree much is you want to and I don't know where you get your information but I have pretty good sources! And just go ahead and Google peoples testimonials on this drugs and you going to have 80% negative response! I know this was the medication did send me into the ER even the ER doctor told me that! And trust me I have one of the best doctors in Southern California! I never sad it was not working for everybody but everybody reacts differently to different medications!
I have not started a probiotic, however, my PCP just recommended a week ago that I start taking one daily. I had my gallbladder out several years ago, and my stomach has been a mess since that time. So it is not out of the ordinary for me to have trouble, just not this much, and this often. My life is full of stress - which is a lot of the reason why I had to go on this medicine in the first place.
I will be 100% honest, this medicine definitely takes a while for you to feel the difference, and for me it was gradual, not sudden, to the point that honestly one day i just realized I was much calmer than ever before. I do think it made my anxiety worse at first and maybe even caused a few panic attacks and that was horrible, and I almost gave up on it, but everyone kept saying to give it time, and they were right. It was tough to ride out the first few weeks, but I am honestly glad I did, because I feel like I can actually have a future now.
I still struggle and I still have things I have not yet overcome due to my anxiety, but I am definitely better.
I hope you have good results!! Anxiety is a terrible thing to suffer from.
Also, I don't want to get in the middle of an argument, but I actually got on WebMD drug interaction checker and talked to my PCP in regards to taking probiotics, vitamins, minerals, etc., and WebMD showed no dangerous interactions and my PCP said they were fine to take together as well.
Having said that, however, I know first hand that medicine effects everyone differently, and I am super sensitive. There have been a lot of medicines I could not tolerate, and this one was tough to get going, but I am thankful I did. I took Paxil for anxiety once a long time ago and it helped but made me super sleepy and the weight gain was not so great. I am hopeful I have found a medicine that will help me enjoy my life!
I responded to your comment down in the other comments below, LOL, sorry!
Hopi:
I started at a very low dose of buspar, 5mg once a day. Maybe your doctor started you at too high a dose and you couldn't tolerate it, Hopi. A low dose and then titrating up to a therapeutic dose works much better for many people. Many people who have started at too high a dose and get side effects right at start up are scared off from taking buspar, but, if taken at a much lower dose, it gives your body a chance to get used to it and the medication can then do its job at treating anxiety. It is so much safer than the benzos, as benzos have an addictive possibility, which is why many doctors are apprehensive of prescribing them to their patients long-term now.
And, as Janie said, it takes a little time to build up in your system, much like the start up of an antidepressant. It is not a "take as needed" medication. But, I started feeling relief from my anxiety the first week I took it. I took it at higher doses, titrating up slowly, and did great on it. But at 10mg three times a day, I experienced headaches and dizziness. I went back down to 5mg doses three times a day and was fine. Buspar is taken safely for many people at 30 to 60mg a day. I have relief from my anxiety though, with doses as low as 5mg once a day. I am so sorry you had such a bad experience Hopi. A smaller dose to start might have helped without sending you to the ER. I am sure that must have been very frightening for you. And, I have been taking probiotics for longer than I have been taking buspar, so the combination of the two has never been a problem in my case. I hope you feel better soon! "G"
My apologies to all the posters here, as my intent was not to start an argument. We are all just here to share information and experiences and to have an interchange of encouragement. Nothing but best wishes to everyone here from me. Thanks, "G"
Hope and Hopi:
I started my comment with typing in "Hope". Sorry, I was addressing my comment to "Hopi".
No arguments here! We are simply here to share our experiences! I'm happy for all of you if this medication works for you! Sorry but it didn't work for me and since I've been off of it I feel much better! I am back on Clonazepam which was the best medication so far for my severe panic disorder! Good luck to you all!
Hopi:
Great news! I am so happy for you that you found something that works so well for you! Keep in touch... "G"
Bethann I'm glad you are doing well on it! I hope it works for me too! I'm on week 1. Try the probiotic it should help. Are you sensitive to milk? Some probiotics contain milk so just be aware. Also I S heard that they can take a while to work too. I'm also trying to eat more yogurt. Hope you're feeling better soon! Hope
Also my dr told me to take vit d and b12 and a probiotic too while on this med and on another one. I also understand that some meds are not for everyone. Sorry Hopi you had a bad experience.
