... started 3 weeks ago, thought it was swollen taste buds, then it got worse to feel just like I scalded my tongue on hot food or liquid. Yesterday my doc prescribed an antidepressant for insomnia, but after only half a pill, got too many side effects and I prefer more natural methods anyway. Just wanted to share that I've found Yogi Bedtime tea to be the most soothing liquid that doesn't sting at all. Also, eating Breyer's Extra Creamy Vanilla ice cream, but will have to up my exercising because of this!! Am taking lots of the amino acid L-Lysine which help heal any kind of mouth sores and such. Good luck to all

My ENT is very familiar with BMS and recommended Lysine which is found in the vitamine aisle. It started working within 5 days. It is the only thing I have tried that works!!
I was treated for thrush in May with nystatin. Cured thrush but have had BMS before and since. I'm about to go nuts!!!
the exact same thing happened to me!!! So if I take acid reducers such as PPIs or H2 blockers then it feels a bit better, but nothing really helps
I diagnosed myself also. Mine started just like yours. My doctor and dentist thought it was a result of switching toothpaste, although I am not at all convinced It only affects my tongue and lips. After 6 weeks I started noticing a change and was diagnosed with thrush. I was prescribed a mouthwash of lidocaine/nystatin combo. It helps but has not solved the problem. It's been several months since this all started. I chew Extra sugarfree gum which helps the dry mouth. I take several vitamins including L-lysine & B-complex (although bloodtest did not reveal any definciency). I did see some improvement after taking the probiotic acidophilus. The worst of the burning mouth went away after the first several weeks but I my lips still burn off and on. Some days are better than others. I hear stress can really have an affect on this condition. Good luck to you and keep us informed!
I take a lot of supplements, probiotics, lysine and a good B complex included. From the research I've done so far, stress seems to be the common factor along with being run-down, which really is just another form of stress. For me, I experienced a series of stressful events followed by disrupted and inadequate sleep (which is still going on). I'm focusing on relaxation techniques and better sleep. I'll be starting the R-Alpha Lipoic Acid when it arrives, 300 mg. twice a day. I've had the burning, tingling, sometimes numb tongue for about a month now. Salt seems to have the worst effect with vanilla ice cream the most soothing. Good luck everyone!
I have 2 small tips to help with the burning mouth. I have found brushing your teeth with warm water instead of very cold water is MORE soothing. Also, chewing Dentyne ice, Artic Chill Gum msks the BMS. I is on the hot side but covers up the burning lips and tongue. ( The gum comes in and black and white package). If I figure anything else out, I will add it to this site. Hang in there everybody. I think I mentioned the clonazapam (generic) medication works great. I take 1 mg. twice a day. You do need to get it from a doctor though.
My latest development is that I have found out I have sleep apnea and have been using the cpap machine. Since being sleep deprived is very stressful I think that's what was the major cause of the burning tongue. It has almost gone away since I've been getting better sleep. I just hope it stays away!!!
Good luck everyone...
Hi. I have had BMS on and off for four years and I take clonazepam .05 mgs. twice a day for anxiety, but this doesn't seem to have any effect on my BMS symptoms. I wish I could have some advice that I could try to get rid of this terrible condition, at least for the time being. I cannot sleep and have trouble eating most everything when my mouth acts up.
This is an update of a past comment. I am now able to take just .25 m. ( 1 quarter of a milligram) of the clonazepam twice a day. Still works and I honestly say, I do not have any side effects from the medication and I do not know I even have Burning Mouth. The medication is not expensive. This is my story and I am sticking to it. Good Luck to all. Linda
I have been told that this is caused by the trigeminal nerve that goes to the mouth and around he lips. Have tried everything from an MRI to all kinds of tests. Nothing found. Taking clonazapam which does help some, but must take it as soon as I feel the pain coming on. If I miss that window, the drugs really do not do much. I have had this for about 12 years. Has anyone found anything that helps? Heard R-Lipoic Acid by RalaPure R is said to cure it. Calling them tomorrow. Will let the group know if I find out anything good. Has anyone tried this yet? Thanks, Linda
Tried r-lipoid Acid by ralapure at the cost of $132 and got one bit of relief from it. It might work for you but it was a waste of money for me. Good luck and let us know if you find anything that helps. Benzo drugs have helped a little for me.
I have ordered it from Vitacost.com, much less expensive, will be using it for 2 months, and according to a study it can take this long for benefits which have proved very successful. A good site for info:
34-menopause-symptoms.com/burning-tongue
There are some links to research articles too. Will keep the group informed.
Sand Dollar, Have you had any good results using the R-Lipoic Acid? Any change at all? Thanks. We must all keep trying.
For me r-lipoid Acid which I tried for 2 months was a complete waste of money!
ditto on R-Lipoic Acid being a waste of money. Never noticed any difference while I was taking it. Gum works the best for me..Dessert Delights strawberry shortcake, ice chips work momentarily until they melt, a store bought mouthguard over my top teeth stops the pain, but looks stupid, so I only wear that at home, eating stops the pain... but I can't eat all the time. Sleep completely eliminates the pain, but that's not an option either. Does everyone's pain get worse as the day goes on?
I am 67 and have had BMS for 2 years. I was told by my dentist that the trigeminal nerve that goes to the mouth around the lips can get damaged and cause this pain. I have been to all the doctors ENT no answer but to put me on clonazapam. I had side effects.
The gynecological said it was hormonal. Hormone theraphy did not help. The maxial facial pain doctor said my mouth was fine and she did assured me that I would not die from this condition and that all she could give me was clonazapam to help with the pain. Doctors say acid relex can cause BMS. I have had gerd for years and have been on Protonix by my gastroligist for many years. I found that protonix has ruined my bones it draws out the calcium and it also stops the acid in your stomach so your food is not digested. Therefore you do not get the nutrients from your food. I am not taking Protonix anymore.
I decided to go to a Naturapathic doctor 1 year ago. She has put me on digestive enzymes, probiotics, calcium, vitamin d,lecithin, L-Glutamine etc.slippery elm (for acid reflex), alpha lopoic acid 600mg by PURE (that helps with the nervous system). I use biotine products for dry mouth I also brush with baking soda. I found Halls REFRESH Mint lozenger helps. EXTRA sugar free gum relieves the pain by cooing. Ice chips help. By midday when it is at its worst I usually have to take a xanax .05 it helps that takes the edge off. Doctors say Chronic stress conditions cause anxiety and that is a big factor for BMS. When I wake up in the morning I am fine but it gets worse as the day goes on. I do not have any problem sleeping. My dermatolagist mentioned she was going to a BMS seminar next weekend. She wants to learn more about this condition. She had never heard of it. It is so relieving to know there are still some doctors that are willing to go that extra mile to help a patient in need. I will reply with the results of my dermatolagists finding.
My thoughts are stay positive, get exercise, try to relieve your stress and know we will find an end to this condition.
Macgirl... did the Naturapathic doctor's PX help with your reflux or with your burning mouth? I've done most of what you've done, but not the Naturapathic route. I do have reflux and thought early on that the BMS was caused by reflux. Two gastro guys say "no way". I had gastr surgery on the hope they were wrong, but unfortunately, it made no difference. Does the tip of your nose ever tingle? That makes me think it may be sinus related. I can't go to any more drs or dentists... too much money, too depressing. Most things I try work for about 3 weeks... it's almost as though they work until my imune system catches on and blocks it. Mostly now I try to ignore it.
I used r-alpha lipoic acid 300mg. twice a day for a month and it got rid of the BM for me. I stopped taking it and now it's starting to come back so I will go back on it. Sorry to hear it hasn't worked for others who tried. Also, am getting more sleep which helps. Since this is a stress related problem, anything that's stress relieving will help. Good luck to all...
I have had this for about a year, and have tried so many things... at last I have found somethig that has helped me. I happened to use a neti-pot, and the relief was instantaneous. I have no idea why... maybe the salt water has something to do with it? Or it's related to sinuses??? Usually salty food makes it worse, but the neti-pot actually works, so you may want to try it.
That is interesting about the trigeminal nerve because I have trigemingal neuralgia and have just developed burning mouth syndrome. I thought it was due to the 3 weeks of steroids I was on for poison ivy. Now I should tell my neuro Dr. about this to figure out if this is connected. Best of luck!
