Old blood has a sour kind of smell. Is the smell sour or is it really foul or fishy? If it is fishy or really foul, it could be an infection. If it is just kind of a sour smell, then it is just old retained uterine lining from either the miscarriage or your last period or it could have been a bit of lining that was building up after you got the Depo. Depo prevents the uterine lining that we shed as our "period" from developing but you may have had a bit of build up to shed. Normally this lining is very bloody and plushy but the hormonal changes caused by your contraceptive makes it not so plushy and so it is drier and may become old before it is shed. This drainage will sometimes look kind of thick because there is more tissue and less blood. If it continues to be a nuisance, see your gynecologist just to be sure.
That's an old blood smell, with the brown discharge. Its probably just a case of some left over from the miscarriage. Weird bleeding can occur with the depo shot, at first. Then some women don't have any period and some spot allot.
