I have been on this patch now for 5 days and feel no pain relief whatsoever. I called my doctor he said give it at least a week and then we could probably increase the dose. My question is what breakthrough medications can I take safely with this while waiting for it to work? Thank you very much.
What breakthrough meds can I take with this patch?

Hi PattiDukes -
I'm not positive, but I thought I read you are using a Butrans Patch. What I didn't see was the dosage, how long you've been on it, if you take any other pain medications, and what you are taking it for.
I've been on the Butrans patch 15 mcg/hr for several years until about 3 months ago when I realized the 15mcg/hr wasn't working. My pain management doctor upped me to 20 mcg/hr. I been on the new dosage for 4 weeks now, and I'm not seeing that much of a change. I have been taking 3-4 Advil at a time once or twice a day and that helps dramatically. You might want to try that.
I don't know what you are paying for your Butrans, but I'm currently paying $225.00 for 4 patches (1 month supply). I'm on Medicare and live in California.
Currently, I don't have any "break thru medication, however, next time I go see my pain management doctor, I'm going to find out what he can give me. I was on 10/325 Norco every 6-8 hours for several chronic pain, and was extremely happy to get off of that.
If you don't have a PAIN MANAGEMENT DOCTOR, that is something else you may want to try getting.
I wish you all the best in finding something to take care of your pain. Constant pain is no fun.
I will be praying for you. Please let me know how things turn out for you.
