I have a work situation that makes it difficult to run out to the bathroom when I get the "diarrhea urge."
Augmentin is giving me mild diarrhea. Is it OK to take Immodium to help with this?

Hi Pooh 12
You must have finished your course of Augmentin by now and hopefully are over the worst side effects. I would be careful about taking anything with Augmentin, even Immodium, as the diarrhea could lead to dehydration, and kidney problems, which the Immodium will not address and may mask. This happened to me and I had to be rushed in as a medical emergency. If your diarrhea worsens it may be best to get back to your prescribing physician before continuing the course.
Hope you are completely okay now and fully recovered from your infection and the diarrhea.
Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance due to diarrhea is directly related to fluid going out the butt. Simple In/Out problem.
Thus, if immodium is reducing the amount of fluid leaving the body via diarrhea, it would be decreasing the amount of fluid loss as well.
Mild dehydration in diarrhea is a simple question of fluids in/out.
Severe diarrhea, and things like toxic megacolon are not simple.
There is no interaction between augmentin and immodium so there is no harm at all but now since augmentin tend to eradicate the normal flora in the lining its better to take augmentin with probiotics like Floranorm so that you can minimise the eradication and reduce the diarrhoea. Hope this will assist you
Seems no harm to take Immodium with Augmentin, however it would be best to talk to your pharmacist/doc who did prescribe the meds, hope this helps?
If its only mild, it may be better not to take Immodium, you should certainly take advice from the pharmacis/doc first, but meantime, keep up your fluid intake, and stick to a plain diet then hopefully once you have completed your course of Augmentin, things will settle down.
