While this is very old, I felt the need to reply since I have been researching and have not seen many answers to questions like this. When my lithium levels were out of range on the low side I was very weepy. Anything would make me cry, and I was moderately depressed. My mania was better, but it was still difficult to not act on impulses. As fair as typically listed side effects, i.e. nausea, headaches, tremor, nothing like that. Those kind of side effects usually occur at higher doses.
If lithium levels are low the symptoms from the disease, such as Bipolar disorder, won't be controlled. So it will effectively be of hardly any therapeutic benefit.
