Have been having stuffy nose/ sinus congestion problems that seem to get worse an hour or two after I take my Flomax and let up a bit after about 24 hours pass. Stuffy nose is listed as a side effect but the statistics are not real decisive. Am wondering if other folks are having the same/ similar experiences.
Are other people on Flomax experiencing stuffy nose/sinus congestion problems?

I have been using Tamsulosin for 4 days now and my sinuses are terrible.
I used my first dose at night as suggested and woke with a banging head and bunged up. Took my 2nd and 3rd doses at dinner time and felt ok until i took my 4th dose on the 4th day and now i cannot breathe through my nose at all.!
Has anyone tried every other day and found any improvements?
I tried Flomax and some other popular BPH meds - all produced intolerable nasal congestion.
I was seeing a new urologist, and told him about the congestion. He asked if I had tried Terazosin. (Could be spelling error). This drug relaxed the prostate, allowing me relief from all symptoms without ANY nasal congestion. Dose ranges from 5 mg - 20 mg daily. There is a blood pressure issue which may account for urologists suggesting other drugs. I have never had a drop in blood pressure from this medicine.
Yes I had nasal congestion for about 2 years until my ENT suggested that I might want to discontinue my flomax. I did and my congestion went away in a few days.
I have been taking Flomax and Dutasteride for almost 6 years. I take both 30 minutes after breakfast and about 2 hours later I have a stuffy nose. I'm 71 and I would really like to be able to get an erection and climax once and awhile. From what I've read here, I cannot take medications for stuffy nose or ED meds for an erection. I am urinating well and often (thankyou HCTZ). I will make it a point to ask my urologist if I could switch to Cialis and see if things could get better all around. I read here about someone stopping Flomax for awhile, then restarting at will. My doctor said I must take as prescribed everyday.
I asked to be switched to tadalafil from tamsulosin for my prostate symptoms. I feel more energized now and ED is a thing of the past. Minimal nasal congestion.
Yes, on my second day of taking Flomax, I had bad nasal congestion.
I had the same problem. My doctor switched me to alfuzosin.
Reduced the congestion.
I have used Flomax and the generic version Tamsulosin many times over the past 10+ or so years and everytime without fail it stuffs me up beyond belief. I am a chronic kidney stone producer and I’ve had around 15 lithotripsys for this issue and they always ask if I need or if I am taking Flomax, but the reaction I get from taking Flomax or the generic version isn’t worth the major discomfort to me. I have been asking my Urologist if anything new has come out because I do believe I could benefit from these drugs to help me pass the stones I produce. I’m just hoping someday there will be a cure for kidney stones because they’ve almost ruined my life.
I am currently recovering from a Lithotripsy on my right kidney and will have to go back for 1-2 more for the same kidney since the stones I have are 20mm 15mm and about 14-17 other random stones of 5mm or more, and that’s not including all the stones in my left kidney. If anyone has any suggestions or heard of any drugs that may help in the ways that Flomax does without the stuffy congested side affects I’d be open and all ears. Best of luck to you all, and thank you for the input.
I've been on Flomax for 3 plus months and since I started I've had sinus congestion that whole time gone to the doctor a couple of times and all he said was you have inflamed sinuses
The label on my Flomax container says "Take at bedtime" but the multi-page printout I was given by my pharmacist says "Take 30 minutes after a meal".
I find I have less congestion when I take Flomax 30 minutes after my dinner.
Hope this helps someone else!
Yes, happens to me every time. I usually take them while I'm passing a kidney stone. Because of the stuffy nose I can't take it daily; I take one 0.4mg pill every other day during the process.
I just started taking flomax and yes I also have been experiencing the same problem with stuffy nose
I'm 65, in reasonably good health except for my prostate, which appears(during cystoscopy) to be growing into my bladder. To avoid TURP(surgery), my Urologist gave me a sample of Rapaflo, which worked well, but with side effects similar to Flomax. Because my insurance wouldn't cover Rapaflo, I went with Flomax. Within a few hours, Flomax began to work as far as being able to pee well. It also immediately caused my nose to get stuffy. Also my lungs feel like they have water in them. This side effect feels like the beginning of a cold which doesn't progress. But i'm only on day two. So we'll see how it goes. On Flomax, I only had to get up once last night to pee, as opposed to twice on Rapaflo, and 4-6 times without taking anything. Oh and I also awoke this morning with a major erection, which to me is a good side effect. So for now, I give Flomax a 9 or 10 for helping me to pee. I take away 2-3 points for cold like symptoms.
Yes. First usage and woke up with both nostrils congested. Must breath through mouth. I thought it was a sinus issue until I read up on the side effects. Will need to discontinue usage.
Well I am caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.If I stop the flomax completely then I am unable to pee normally during the night.Takes perhaps 5 minutes and do not totally empty.Taking Flomax every day I am still bothered with extreme stuffiness. Proscar supposedly has been shrinking my prostate I am told, however it does not help me pee as Flomax .I have heard nothing about Proscar and cancer of the prostate. I will be 72 years old in May.
I have experienced the same nasal congestion after taking FLOMAX, and try to use SUDAFED to lessen the congestion.
My problem with flomax was stuffy nose, and sinus discomfort. I am allergic to sulfa drugs, and flomax contains sulfa. Doc switched me to Proscar. (generic name-Finasteride 5mg. You may also be allergic to sulfa. Hope this helps. Kenny Ray
I would love to take Sudafed, simply because it works. But Sudafed and other Antihistamines increase BPH symtoms. At least that's what I have been reading.
I have been experiencing very stuffy nose sinus since starting on flomax, also started Lipitor at the same time. However, not sure if there is a connect - maybe - the stuffiness is severe - it shut off all air intake thru the nose, then breathing thru my mouth quickly develops into dry mouth. Have used sinus rinse using the bottle w/ large spout, that in conjunction w/ nasal spray works sometimes. Seems to happen when i lie down
Pshire, My right nostril would completely block up, which was incredibly annoying. My sinuses were also very tender to press on. I wouldn't be able to tolerate it though if both nostrils were completely blocked up. I would definitely recommend an alternative from your doctor.
