Latent Rxtn, Hives:
I began SSRI treatment for mild to moderate depression about 3 weeks ago.
20 mg fluoxetine generic, mornings, upon rising.
1x per day, about 3 weeks ago.
In conjunction with NDRI, 10mg dexmethylphenidate for AADD.
Fluoxetine prescribed for mild to moderate depression symptoms.
Itching began as minor annoyance approximately on days 17-19, increasing in intensity and proliferation around day 20. On day 23 and 24, full blown reaction, hives beginning on inner fore arms, scalp, neck, spreading to shoulders, back, legs, arm pits, back of hands, torso, buttocks, and crotch.
25 mg diphenhydramine stopped histamine response, drowsiness countered with next dose of 10mg dexmethylphenidate as prescribed, washed down with strong coffee mixed with Reese's flavor International creamer.
Bummer, because the fluoxetine plus dexmethylphenidate was working as good as anything can.
I experienced a near exactly similar, latent allergic reaction, with Wellbutrin/bupropion. However, on bupropion, the rxtn manifested on day 5, progressing to full body, at day 7, at which point I dc'd it immediately, waited for hives to disappear. Next about 2 or 3 days later I took another bupropion, and the same reaction occurred.
Leads me to reason, that my histamine response wiring, may be opposite the norm. Whereby beyond some threshold, the presence of serotonin in bloodstream, causes a histamine response, instead of the other way around like it does in most people.
I hope this report and post will be useful to others.
Godspeed.
I've been taking Prozac for about 2 months now, I have experienced hives that itch very badly and appear all over my body. When I first began taking the medication the hives slowly began to form and picked up over time. Now I have them on my back, face, chest, legs, even the sides of my breast .
I got a terrible rash all around my midsection. It didn't hurt, but was a bright orange in color. It's a shame because I really liked Prozac. I was only on it for about 2 weeks before changing.
I didn't have a problem with hives and prozac but had a terrible time with a terrible itchy rash on effexor., It was awful.
I didn't, but I have heard from many who did, and it is a listed side-effect. Tell the Dr.
That is a very common side effect. Try some Benadryl. You may want to let your dr know.
Even after taking it a month, I showed no symptoms of hives or itching... hmm
