My wife was at the doctor for salmonella poisoning and is allergic to penicillin. The doctor prescribed generic Bactrim and she has been taking this medication for two days. She now has itchy hives-looking patches on her legs and lower back. I researched and saw that hives are a side effect that happens rarely. Is there a common chemical compound between the penicillin family and the Bactrim family. She needs the antibiotics due to her sickness but I am concerned about her continuing to use them because of the outbreak. Is there a similarity and should she continue use and count herself as one of the rare patients who receive hives from the sulfa class of antibiotics
Hives outbreak while taking generic Bactrim because allergic to penicillin?

You may have a sulfa allergy. I had thee exact reaction 25 yrs ago. That's how I found out I was allergic to sulfa
You are right, Bactrim belongs to the drug class of Sulfonamides which are not related to Penicillin.
Your wife is experiencing an allergic reaction to the antibiotic.
From the literature of Drugs.com:
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling).

I recommend you take her to the Hospital asap.
