Hi, my doctor has told me to reinstate my amitriptyline as i am having really bad withdrawal symptoms. Does anyone know how long after reinstating i should get relief. I was on the drug for 3 years and tapered and stopped 3 months ago and started reinstating 3 days ago. Thanks
When will Amitriptyline withdrawal symptoms go?

Because the Amitriptyline is out of your system now, you should expect to maybe get some induction side effects as you start it again, hopefully not the usual 4 weeks worth as your body has dealt with this medication before, but maybe a week or 2. Do you mind me asking what the withdrawals were like for you? I discontinued Amitriptyline early last year and it would be good to compare notes?
Thanks for the response. I was on 75mg Amitriptyline (for Anxiety) and slowly tapered down to 25mg every other day. My doctor then told me to come off the drug. Everything was fine for a month but my muscles were hurting quite a bit. Then after 2 months my digestion has stopped working properly and i feel incredibly full all the time, my asthma has become substantially worse (i have very mild asthma usually), chronic dry cough, head and sinus pressure, chest pain and tightness. I went from dr to dr trying to figure out what these symptoms were and the drs have told me its because i came off the drug too quickly. I have been back on the drug for 3 days but still no relief from these new symptoms. I dont think these are typical withdrawal symptoms so perhaps this may not help you at all!?
I'm so sorry you have had to deal with all of this! When i weaned off Amitriptyline i also had (back) ache (the reason for which i was taking it) and insomnia + headaches, also low mood. 3 days isn't a long time to be back on it, so please try to hang out a bit longer... If after a week you have no improvement in symptoms revisit your doctor. Obviously if you start feeling worse before then see him/her sooner. I'm hoping it will work out for you again this time...
Delia, how long did your insomnia last after coming off of amitriptyline. I’ve had severe insomnia for 2.5 months now. Wondering when it will abate. Thanks!
How much were you on? IF its withdrawal after a few days it should start lessening.
Thanks for the response. I was on 75mg and slowly came down to 25mg every other day and then came off completely. These symptoms started about 2 months after i took my last dose hence why im not entirely sure the drug withdrawal is to blame but that is what the drs think and i have had all the necessary tests to exclude anything serious.
