I have noticed that since starting amitriptyline for migraines that I am sometimes seeing things that are not there and it is making me very jumpy and a little anxious. Did anyone experience this when taking it? I have been on it for almost 2 weeks and it doesn't happen all the time, just every few days.

I started getting auditory hallucinations when I increased the dosage of amitriptyline to 75mg,
It usually happens at bedtime and on awakening. I get a male voice repeating the Lord's prayer over and over. Fortunately it is not very loud so I manage to get to sleep fairly easily, and I don't seem to hear it in the day time apart from first thing in the morning. Ocassionally I hear the voice but can't make out the words, but I know it is the same thing being repeated, and sometimes I hear nothing at all. It is very bizzare though, I noticed that other people have experienced hearing music, such as rap music that is quiet loud, I guess I'm lucky really in comparison. One other thing I noticed with taking amitriptyline. it has made my tinnitus a lot worse than what it was.
Yes absolutely it does. I have been taking it at night for migraine prevention for 10 years. I am on 50mg at night. I see patterns and people and horrible witches in my bedroom. I am awake and they disappear seconds after I turn the light on. I don't have them during the day. I am used to it so don't get scared anymore. I have just started a weaning off programme to get back down to 25mg or under as I feel this drug is causing tinnitus and I am fed up with the morning drowsiness. It works very well i hardly get migraines anymore. I just hope this remains on the lower dose. I may even manage without it completely.
I have been taking this medicine for exactly two weeks. I was started on 100mg at bedtime. Then last night the seeing things started. I was so into the vision that I woke my husband and I got more aggressive when he kept telling me that no one was there. I searched the house over and over trying to find my daughter and it happened again today when I got home from the store, I thought my daughter was in the house because I seen her car. I rushed into the house and I thought she was running away from me and her car was. I went as far as I could, I called her and left her a message wanting to know why she left with out telling me bye . She called me just a few minutes ago and she said she was not here at all since the 30th of January and today is the 12th of February.
I wasn't seeing things, but it made me have panic attacks, overly anxious, loss of appetite. I had to get off of it. I was on 10mg, for two days we upped it to 20mg, and that was a lot worse. This drug, evidently, was not for me. 3 of the worst weeks in my life.
After 3 years of headaches in my left temple, my doctor had an MRI taken and sent me to a Neurologist. Everything was norma, so they started me out on Amitriptyline at 5mg 1X a day.
Then they slowly upped t, to where m tasking 100mg per day. Within a week of taking this,
I woke up and reached over to my Water Bottle and saw a Tarantula on it.
I freaked and grabbed a flashlight and looked all over my bedroom, but nothing was found.
About 2 weeks later, it was the same scenario, only this time it was a Praying Mantis.
Fast forward to last night.
I had gone to bed but was awakened by some "light pollution".
It was a flashlight shining through the shutters.
I layed there and then it turned to red lasers, coming through those same shutters..
I jumped out of bed to see a kid about 14 yo, coming face to face with me at the bedroom window, like he was some kind of lookout.
The 2nd (older) kid, went towards our front porch.
I just KNEW, he was going to steal the light bulb from the front porch!
Heart racing, I grabbed a flashlight and went outside,
and everything was fine and the light bulb still there.
So to draw an honest solution, I review that last 15 minutes of our security camera footage.
There was NOONE there, although it did show me outside with the flashlight.
It wasn't like I was sleep walking, because the second I got out of my bed,
to investigate these lights, I was wide awake.
Weird crap huh...
I'm so glad I've come across this thread. I am actually in the process of weaning off of 100mg amitriptyline because of these hallucinations (and it making me depressed and sleep paralysis, the list honestly goes on forever). I keep seeing bugs little ants or spiders during the day. Quick, crawling across my peripheral vision, as soon as I focus on it it's gone. At night however if I wake, especially if I'm startled awake, I keep seeing tarantulas crawling or large spiders dropping from the ceiling and I only just told my doctor today but no one else.. not even my husband, because I feel like they'll think I'm crazy. I'll also see smoke billowing under doors in the hallway. Itz terrifying. I've been forcing myself to watch these visions to see if they dissipate and eventually they do. But for a few minutes they seem so real. I'm glad I'm not alone and I'm glad I'm stopping this medication.
Thanks everyone! To answer some questions: I am only on 10 MG and have had NO migraines since starting, which is a HUGE relief, because I was getting them 3 or 4 times in a 7 day time frame from when they started and some of them lasted for almost 3 days at a time
Hello HNM122
Hallucinations can happen on any dose. That said you could ask your Doctor about reducing the dose to see if this prevents the hallucinations.

HNM122, i just wanted to draw your attention to my mistake when i answered your question, i meant to say that hallucinations are NOT a normal side effect of taking Amitriptyline. You are on the lowest dose, so reduction isn't an option. Maybe a change of medication? But i would be worried about your migraines returning! I can imagine the hallucinations are easier to deal with than multiple migraines every week?
Honestly, the hallucinations are more tolerable than the migraines. My only concern is having a major panic attack, being out of my anxiety meds. I am thinking about just talking to my counselor about getting me back on them, this way IF that should happen, I will have them on hand.
Hello HNM122
Firstly apologise to Pledge for misreading his reply. However I stand by my comment. I live in the UK and hallucinations is the side effects of this drug and it tells you so in the patient information. I too take this medication but for a different reason. That said, where you live it is not known as a side effect and for that reason I would seek medical advice.

This med has a million side effects I personally won't take something with a list this long. I would call the doctor and have you had a migraine since starting it?
I've been on it for 35 yrs. I've never had that experience. You need to tell the dr, this can be a sign of a serious complication. How much are you taking?
Hello HNM122
As the other two posters have said hallucinations is a known side effect of this drug. However there are alternative medications. So if you are finding the hallucinations troublesome contact your Doctor.
Take care
Hello HNM122
Sorry I put this comment in the wrong place.

Hi, i agree with Pledge, this is a 'normal' side effect. I have been taking Amitriptyline for several years, an even during the induction phase (first 4 weeks), i didn't experience this. I cam completely understand how this is causing anxiety. I take a combination of medications, and if i miss one out (due to running out of tablets), i suffer with hallucinations - mainly seeing fly's/bugs in front of me, not nice! You need to discuss this with your doctor. I hope you get on well!
I am having the seeing bugs issue and it is only once in a while, but it is scary!
Hi, i just reread my answer, i meant to say this 'ISN'T' a normal side effect! I know how the hallucinations can cause concern, the first time it happened i totally freaked out! Let me know what your doctor says??
Hello NHM122. The side effect you are experiencing (seeing things) is considered (I am not a doctor) not to be a normal side effect. I suggest you contact your doctor. Regards pledge
