I've been taking ADHD meds ever since I was in middle school. Over the last few years I've been taking 2x 30mg Adderall a day and things were great. My work switched insurance carriers and that forced me to switch doctors. My new doctor will only prescribe 2x 20mg a day. He says this is the max dosage for an adult, but I don't understand that, because I've been prescribed more for years. It wasn't bad at first, but it's getting difficult for me to focus towards the end of the day.
Is there anyone who has any experience with these problems? Or has any suggestions?
Is there something I can do if my Adderall isn't working anymore?

The maximum dosage for a healthy adult is 60 mg divided in 2-3 doses daily. I’m on 60 a day ir and you’re explaining the exact symptoms I had when I was on that same dose. It wasn’t cutting it and I just told my doctor how I felt. Went up 10mg then another and I find this dose very very therapeutic for a change. Wich is nice. When the pills actually freaking work. I take sandoz and it’s barely ok. Teva is my go to, HOWEVER most docs won’t take you above 40mg unless you are crazy adhd and have other conditions and etc that excacerbate the adhd.making it worse than normal..this could be the generic you are taking i really think for most people 40mg a day is a great and generous dose. But when you get a brain injury or something then they’ll give you 60 a day lol sad but true..take a tuns one half hour before taking the adderall and see if that helps. You’ll thank me later lol
He’s just wrong. See someone else. Or get a referral to a psychiatrist. 60mg is not too much to ask for.
Yes, see a different doctor. If you are seeing a doctor that refuses to listen to you, that is not the doctor that you want to be seeing! Unless you reside in a town with only one doctor, there should be more than one provider, in your geographical area, on your insurance. You could, also, try calling your insurance company and explaining the situation. I have called my insurance company in the past and gotten things resolved that way.
Bottom line... the doctor is paid to provide care for YOU and should be listening to YOU! You have a history of taking this medication and there is a reason that you were on your dosage and it worked... that reason is because that is what is right for YOU!
Dextroamphetamines are a closely related drug and a good alternative. Possibly there is a short acting version of Adderall and definitely there is one for the Dextroamph. to add on to the end of your day where the drug stops working. Switching Drs. also may resolve the problem but you'll probably have to make an app't. as a consultation to learn if the new Doc will up your dosage. Do you go to a psychiatrist? They are trained in the fine tuning of your medicines and you may want to search for a good one that's on your plan. This could also be a consultation. No Doc knows more about treating ADHD than a psychiatrist who treats ADHD patients. This will always be your best choice vs. a Family Doc or Internist.
Might help, rather! ☺
I read the manual posted, which was updated 2/2014. Is that from the latest DSM? I did not see much specificity regarding adult dosages, mainly pediatric dose titration.
My pdoc of appx. a decade has told me 60 mg/day is the upper limit for ADHD when I asked. I have personal experience with this.
Lanesmiley, please PM me if you would like. I sympathise with your situation and if you would like to talk further, I have some suggestions I hope might bell's
Best!
It was barely mentioned but specifically stated that 60mg was the normal maximum dose for an adult with ADHD and suggested that patients who want/need more be thoroughly tested by cutting them off for a period to "see what happens" and if an alternative therapy might be indicated instead.
