I am directed to only take 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at bedtime. How do I taper off of this by only taking 1/2 of a 1mg twice daily? I had a seizure when I quit my Xanax.I don't want to go thru that ever again. It was bad. Any recommendations for tapering odd this dosage safely? And I have only used it since March 8th this year (last month). I just don't want to be on meds that can cause any more seizures or withdrawal. Please feel free to help
I have been on 1 mg clonazepam for 5 weeks now.

Hello friend.
I have a method of/for tapering off of benzodiazepine(s) It's a rather lengthy and/or confusing answer.
But the main thing is, especially with Xanax and mostly with any benzo diazepam, the key thing is to taper slowly!! I was on 4 mg a day of Xanax after returning from Ground Zero NYC for September 11th 2001. There's all kinds of answers, correct answers are hard to find.
My example is I went from 1 mg Xanax four times a day 21 years ago up until I got disgusted with how they made me feel. The short of it is...
... find a compounding Pharmacy in your area, I live in a very small town of 25,000 people and there's a compounding pharmacy here. There should be one around you someplace. Okay, go to the doctor and ask him to write you out a prescription to taper you down and take that prescription to the compounding pharmacy.
Example: I cut 4 mg a day down to three and I did that for just a couple days cuz that's not much of a cut then I cut it down to two a day... for about 10 days. Now comes the fun part. From two pills (1mg each) a day or one every 12 hours I started having problems with withdrawal. That's why I researched withdrawal myself. There's not too many doctors (my humble opinion) that learn/know how to withdrawal properly. You need to tell your doctor so he can write you a prescription for compounding. That will almost eliminate any failure or relapse chances.
What worked the best for me from 2 mg a day to where I'm at now at 0.75mg a day. OR one 0.5mg pill ... three times a day was quite a challenge for me.
After many tries of cutting up the pills myself and not getting it right and relapsing I researched and read everything I could about benzodiazepines and what I came up with and what worked is taper from hypothetically 1 mg twice a day to wherever you want to go, (my case is that I need SOME benzo's just to be "myself). Keyword is slow and steady. Had my compounding pharmacy cut the ingredients to a very precise level that you or anyone else can NOT achieve alone.
Formula: cut benzo by 10-15% for 10-14 days. Then another 10-15% for another 10-14 days keep that schedule up until you are where you want to be.
If you have any questions you can just ask me here or friend me and you we can speak in private.
Best regards,

Ps: Everything Masso said I also agree. never do this without a health care professional guiding you. A good person to speak to is a registered pharmacist. They seem to have more time to discuss with you than a doctor's precious time.
First off you must inform your Dr./Psychiatrist of what you are intending on doing and have him/her help you with a discontinuation schedule in order to avoid withdrawals.
Do not try to do this on your own, do not stop cold turkey.
Everyone reacts differently to medications specially stopping a very addicting one like a benzodiazepine, even if it is 1mg. So what you read online, what other people´s experiences are, they are all unique, it might work for them but not necessarily for you.
This must be done under medical supervision, even if it is a low dose and only a month and a week.
