Drug Interaction Report
4 potential interactions and/or warnings found for the following 2 drugs:
- armodafinil
- Focalin XR (dexmethylphenidate)
Interactions between your drugs
dexmethylphenidate armodafinil
Applies to: Focalin XR (dexmethylphenidate), armodafinil
In single-dose pharmacokinetic studies, healthy volunteers given modafinil (200 mg) with dextroamphetamine (10 mg) or methylphenidate (40 mg) exhibited a delay in the absorption of modafinil by approximately 1 hour. The mechanism of interaction is unknown. No other alterations in the pharmacokinetics of any of the drugs were observed. Although not studied, the interaction is likely to also occur with the various prodrug, racemic, and enantiomeric formulations of these drugs (e.g., amphetamine, lisdexamfetamine, dexmethylphenidate, armodafinil).

Drug and food interactions
armodafinil food
Applies to: armodafinil
Administration with food may delay the absorption of modafinil (the racemate) and armodafinil (the R-enantiomer) without significantly affecting their overall bioavailability. According to the product labeling, modafinil's absorption may be delayed by approximately one hour if taken with food. Similarly, the time to reach peak plasma concentration (Tmax) of armodafinil may be delayed by approximately 2 to 4 hours in the fed state.

Therapeutic duplication warnings
Therapeutic duplication is the use of more than one medicine from the same drug category or therapeutic class to treat the same condition. This can be intentional in cases where drugs with similar actions are used together for demonstrated therapeutic benefit. It can also be unintentional in cases where a patient has been treated by more than one doctor, or had prescriptions filled at more than one pharmacy, and can have potentially adverse consequences.
Stimulants
Therapeutic duplication
The recommended maximum number of medicines in the 'stimulants' category to be taken concurrently is usually one. Your list includes two medicines belonging to the 'stimulants' category:
- armodafinil
- Focalin XR (dexmethylphenidate)
Note: In certain circumstances, the benefits of taking this combination of drugs may outweigh any risks. Always consult your healthcare provider before making changes to your medications or dosage.
Cerebral stimulants
Therapeutic duplication
The recommended maximum number of medicines in the 'cerebral stimulants' category to be taken concurrently is usually one. Your list includes two medicines belonging to the 'cerebral stimulants' category:
- armodafinil
- Focalin XR (dexmethylphenidate)
Note: In certain circumstances, the benefits of taking this combination of drugs may outweigh any risks. Always consult your healthcare provider before making changes to your medications or dosage.
Drug Interaction Classification
Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.
Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.
Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan.
No interaction information available. |
