Tolazoline Disease Interactions

There are 4 disease interactions with tolazoline.

Major

Tolazoline (applies to tolazoline) vascular dysfunction

Major Potential Hazard, High plausibility. Applicable conditions: Cerebral Vascular Disorder, Ischemic Heart Disease

The use of tolazoline is contraindicated in patients with coronary artery disease or insufficiency or following a cerebrovascular accident. Hypotension due to decreased peripheral vascular resistance results from direct relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and alpha adrenergic blockade. Heart rate and cardiac output are increased.

Moderate

Tolazoline (applies to tolazoline) acid-base balance

Moderate Potential Hazard, Moderate plausibility. Applicable conditions: Acidosis

The therapeutic efficacy of tolazoline in reducing persistent vasoconstriction and pulmonary hypertension may be pH dependent. Acidosis may decrease the efficacy of tolazoline.

Moderate

Tolazoline (applies to tolazoline) histamine release

Moderate Potential Hazard, Moderate plausibility. Applicable conditions: Peptic Ulcer, Alkalosis, Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage

The histamine-releasing properties of tolazoline can stimulate gastric secretion resulting in hypochloremic alkalosis, stress ulcers, and GI bleeding. Therapy with tolazoline should be administered cautiously in patients with GI disorders such as gastritis, enteritis, or peptic ulcer disease.

Moderate

Tolazoline (applies to tolazoline) renal dysfunction

Moderate Potential Hazard, Moderate plausibility.

Tolazoline is primarily eliminated by the kidney as unchanged drug. The serum concentration of tolazoline can be increased in patients with renal impairment. Therapy with tolazoline should be administered cautiously in patients with compromised renal function. Clinical monitoring of vital signs, blood gases, and renal function is recommended.

Drug Interaction Classification

These classifications are only a guideline. The relevance of a particular drug interaction to a specific individual is difficult to determine. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting or stopping any medication.
Major Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.
Moderate Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.
Minor Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan.
Unknown No interaction information available.
