Oxytocin Disease Interactions

There are 2 disease interactions with oxytocin:

Oxytocin (applies to oxytocin) vascular dysfunction

Moderate Potential Hazard, Moderate plausibility. Applicable conditions: Cerebral Vascular Disorder, Hypertension

Hypertensive events, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and arrhythmias have occurred during oxytocin therapy. Oxytocin possesses presser activity. Caution is advised in patients with uncontrolled hypertension or cerebrovascular dysfunction.

Oxytocin (applies to oxytocin) volume overload

Moderate Potential Hazard, Moderate plausibility. Applicable conditions: Fluid Retention

Volume overload can occur during administration of oxytocin. Oxytocin possess antidiuretic properties. Consideration should, therefore, be given to the possibility of volume overload and water intoxication, particularly when oxytocin is administered continuously by infusion and the patient is receiving fluids by mouth.

Drug Interaction Classification

These classifications are only a guideline. The relevance of a particular drug interaction to a specific individual is difficult to determine. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting or stopping any medication.
Major Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.
Moderate Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.
Minor Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan.
Unknown No interaction information available.
