If you cut, split or chew an ER, XL,XR (these all mean extended release) pill/tablet too much medication will be released at once and most likely you will experience more intense side effects and would defeat the purpose of taking this type of pills/tablets.
These pills/tablets are taken so the medication is released gradually maintaining an even amount of the medication through out the day.
