You need to watch what you eat. Less than 45gms of fat per day especially
Several months before I started ECT, I had developed daily diarrhea, no doctors knew what was causing it. I wore adult diapers during my first two ECT sessions because I was afraid I would have diarrhea during them. I never did and stopped wearing the diapers. ECT did not seem to make the diarrhea or my stomach in general worse. Eventually, I started on an old antidepressant called Amitriptyline, which stopped the diarrhea and helped improve the depression.
For me the hardest side effect was memory loss, particularly short term memory loss, which is pretty common. I adapted by setting lots of reminders on my phone and taking notes in a small notebook that I kept in my purse. I would tell people “my memory is bad right now, I’m just going to take some notes”. And no one asked any questions or made me feel bad. It took about 7 months after I stopped ECT for my memory to mostly return to its previous state.
