Betadine contains methanol, which is very dangerous, If it was just a tablespoon or so, their may be burning and a lot of coughing. My 1st guess before the ambulance and only if the person is acting in extreme pain etc, call poison control center immediately tell them what she ingested instead of the cough syrup and they will help you over the phone and will be able to tell you if the ambulance/er is needed... everything that she has taken in 24 hours is important for the center to know... ok... good luck and act quick...
Even if there are no symptoms, it should be out of our body. I had the same exact experience on new year's day. Drank betadin instead of cough syrup. Take lots of salt in a glass of water and drink it. It will make you vomit. If it stays in the body, it can cause more harm. Doc gave me anti dose injection, medication for vomit sensation and one other medication. Also, drink lots of water. I drank about 4 lt of water but it did not stay in my stomach. Make sure that you do not get dehydrated in this process. If you loose lot of liquid and feel dizzy, make sure to visit doc and get IV. IV will nutralize idodine effect. I hope this helps.
Thanks swatjul23. I have a whole new outlook on betadine. Her doc said when in med school, his roomie was involved in a study involving betadine. He drank large volumes at several different times. The only side effect was moderate bloating and diarrhea. My wife is doing great. Thanks again for your comment.
Betadine (povidone-iodine 10%) does not contain Methanol. It has been used as an external disinfectant prior to surgery for years. The active antimicrobial agent is iodine and is necessary for thyroid hormone synthesis. Excess iodine will be filtered out by normal kidneys. Povidone is a commonly used excipient which passes through the body safely. Other inactive ingredients in Betadine are not harmful. Recently, Betadine has been introduced as a gargle for the treatment of sore throat.
Addendum: The Betadine gargle is (povidone-iodine 1%). This is a ten times dilution of the external disinfectant which is 10%.
