I was in hospital when MD added DEPAKOTE to the LAMICTAL (I had been taking for years and it was working fine). Can this combination of drugs put you into a coma? Can this cause you to have a grand mal seizure a couple of months after coming off the DEPAKOTE? I almost died from this combination of 2 different seizures meds. I was in a coma for about 3 months. When a treating physician was asked by GD to 'take me off the DEPAKOTE' I came 'out of the coma and was able to respond to family and doctors with appropriate answers to their questions. Has someone else had this occur to them? What did you do?

The interaction between both meds is considered potentially "Major", meaning:
Major Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.

lamoTRIgine divalproex sodium sodium
Applies to: Lamictal (lamotrigine), Depakote (divalproex sodium sodium)
Before using lamoTRIgine, tell your doctor if you also use divalproex sodium sodium. This combination may cause skin rash, restlessness, seizures, tremors, muscle weakness, and staggering walk. If you take both medications together, tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. You may need a dose adjustment or special tests in order to safely take both medications together. Avoid driving until you know how the medications will affect you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
