I started a small dose of Wellbutrin (not SR or XL) a week ago and the only unpleasant side effect I have is constipation (with upper GI discomfort). The problem is, I already have moderate-to-severe constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) and must take a prescription medication from Europe to manage it (Resolor/prucalopride). No other treatment or Rx helps my IBS-C. Even with the Resolor, it doesn't help the constipation from Wellbutrin very much. I added Miralax and fiber each day but since the problem is caused by reduced peristaltic waves and not diet or dehydration, those modifications don't treat the issue.
I've seen mixed responses as to whether this is a side effect that will likely go away over time or not. I also have fibromyalgia and want to stay on Wellbutrin if it will help my physical and mental energy levels in addition to depression. If the constipation doesn't go away, I might look into vilazodone/Viibryd.
Wellbutrin - Will constipation side effect go away?

My constipation is so bad I want to hurt someone. I tried Triple leaf Laxative tea and it worked great for 1 day. I drank the tea for the last 2 days and nothing. All it has done is make me grouchy. I take Bupropion HCL SR 100 MG. Other than the constipation it is my favorite antidepressant. The constipation didn't seem to be a problem in the first month, but I was taking Colace with it. Right now my boyfriend is at the store picking me up some prune juice. Wish me luck.
I just started Wellbutrin, and I'm having constipation too. I'll try that colace. Thanks for the info!
Update by gigantor: After about 2-3 weeks the side-effects eased and things are back to normal, even with a dosage increase.
I'd have to say no, not without you taking steps to beat it. I take fiber and drink lots of water, then I take peri colace at night. It stimulates peristalsis. There is also a little home remedy that really works if you're up for that kind of thing. We gave it to all our residents at a nursing home every am, and we seldom needed to give laxatives. You mix equal parts of applesauce, prune juice, and miller's bran. You can put it in the frig and keep it for several days. Eat a few tbsp every am. We used to put it in their cereal. It tastes pretty decent.
Hello gigantor. I am afraid you answered your own question. It does, and does not. (constipation) Just hope that it eases and leaves. Regards, pledge
