I have been taking Xanax for 31 years. I was started at 4 mg's a day & now I'm up to 6 mg's a day. I was on Valium for 10 years before that & they switched me over to Xanax telling me it would work better for me. I am wanting to get off of the drug without very serious withdrawals & I need to know if I can substitute Valium for the Xanax safely ? If not, what else can be tried ?
Can Valium be substituted for Xanax ?

I am actually in the same situation. This is my second week on 4 2mg Valium 3 times a day. My Dr thought it was a good idea to substitute the Valium for Xanax. I'm a nurse and disagreed at first but now on week 2, I'm doing much better. It's very dangerous to get off of Xanax after many years of use...
Thank you so much, I want off these things & I'll try about anything. I know it's going to be hard, I'm 65 now. How did they find out how much to start you or ? Is it mg for mg ?
No. Definitely not mg=mg I takes 10mg of Valium to be equivalent to just 1 mg of Xanax. Week 1 and 2 she had me taking 2mg Valium- 4 pills-3x a day so 12 Valium a day. I am on week 4, I'm doing fine from not having the Xanax. She also put me on Lamictal for seizures, because that's a big withdrawal symptom from Xanax. But, you're Dr should titrate you're dosage of Xanax by 20% every 2 weeks. Let me know how you are doing...
Thank you for your help, I hope this works for me too, GOD BLESS you friend
