Is there a reason that my Dr insists on seeing me each time I have a cold sore? The pharmacist said it was a good way for the drs office to get money from the visit. Im 100% sure what a cold sore is and when its coming. Its more beneficial for me to have them on hand for when I know one is coming so having a large supply on hand for those times is a neccesity. Is there anything that I can take to my Dr to show her that theres no laws around this... I feel that they are using every excuse in the book to not give more than 4 at a time and its really frustrating me. How would she like to have to come to work and have a huge cold sore on her lip... no matter what it is, theres a stigma about them and they are not pretty AT ALL and in fact they are very painful.
Valacyclovir - WHY will my Dr only give me 4 pills at a time???

You are correct. You should have them available. It doesn't take your dr to tell you you're getting one for sure. There is definately no law about it being prescribed. This is what he's basing it on-Usual Adult Dose for Herpes Simplex Labialis
2 g orally every 12 hours for a total of 2 doses (4 g)
Therapy should be started at the earliest sign of a cold sore (such as tingling, burning, or itching).
However, the second part is almost screaming give him enough to have some on hand for this.
My hubby has a physical today and I advised him to mention this to her. Do you know where I can find any literature or anything I can print out to bring with him so theres not a battle back and forth. I understand they need to make money but this is just crazy. You have to catch it just at the tingle time or you are done for for a few days... even with the valtrex. It works like a gem and makes it go away SO MUCH FASTER than anything else such as Lysine but, if you dont have it and have to wait for a dr then you are out of luck. If you have anything that you could send me that would be awesome! He has a drs apt at 1 today eastern time. Even a link to something would be amazing! Thanks so much!
PS on a side note, our Prescription insurance also charges us the SAME amount for 2 as they would for 40 so that's another major frustrating part.
The insurance needs to be brought out too. What I said is all there is in the literature. There is no way he can count on getting the med on a weekend and what happens if he feels it friday night? To tell you the truth if my dr did that to me I'd change drs. Here is the link to the dosage info

drugs.com/dosage/valacyclovir.html- This is the link. I just answered you but they seem to think I gave another website instead of their own and pulled it.
It will show up, but I basically said that he needs to tell the dr about the insurance too. There is no way he can count on getting it on the weekend so what if he feels it start friday afternoon. To tell you the truth if my dr couldn't understand I'd change drs.
Thank you so very much for your advice and help. I'm waiting for him to get home to tell me how it went. Best have went the way he asked for it to go. We pay them for their services not the other way around. It's not a narcotic in fact it's it's a necessity to function properly during daily life. Work and such due to the ugly stigma cold sores have. They are not pretty and they are painful. This medication is amazing for cold sores. Takes them right away! Only thing out there that does that as fast as this med does!!! Again. Thanks so much!
My Mom used to get them bad, before these meds existed. I know what she went thru. It makes no sense that the dr limits him like that. I hope he got the dr to see his point of view.
I would find another Doctor, that's not right all.
My doctor just prescribed me this medicine for a terrible outbreak, my entire bottom lip and the skin below down to my chin is covered in three separate clusters of blisters with each cluster having 10-15 blisters in each. She prescribed 1 gram twice a day for 7-10 days. I take so many meds, if I can take 2 grams twice a day for 2 days, I would much prefer that. I'll ask my doctor, but is my dose the normal or the shorter time frame? Curious!
