Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain reliever and is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is sometimes prescribed in patients who take antidepressants including Zoloft. Zoloft is an antidepressant from a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
Zoloft and Tramadol need to used cautiously together because there is a risk of developing a rare but potentially serious drug interaction called serotonin syndrome.
Serotonin syndrome most often occurs when two drugs that affect the body's level of serotonin are taken together at the same time. The drugs cause too much serotonin to be released or to remain in the brain area. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include agitation, confusion, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, muscle twitching, shivering, headache and diarrhea. Severe cases can result in high fever, unconsciousness or even death.
Serotonin syndrome is more likely to occur when you first start or increase the medicine.
