Hi friends,
My physician has given me a prescription for Topamax for weight loss support. This program will be supervised and I will see the Dr weekly. An EKG and blood work were required and all normal, however cholesterol and sugars were getting up there. My physician told me I'm not at risk for breast or lung cancer or lots of other diseases judging by my lifestyle and family history, but I am at risk for stroke or heart attack if I don't lose around 35-40 lbs.
I'm well aware that programs like Weight Watchers are successful and that patients don't keep weight off unless they change their eating habits, but I'm going to jump start my weight loss with the Topamax. I also take:
Clonazepam 0.5, Straterra, Viibryd and Diovan. I occasionally use a rescue and a maintenance asthma inhaler.
I'm hoping not to be lectured, but rather to hear about anyone's experience with Topamax for weight loss. I know it must have worked well as it is now FDA approved for that purpose.
Thank You! I value everyone on our site and appreciate your support.

I was prescribed topamax for migraines. It has helped me tremendously. I do not have a weight problem but loss around 25 pounds on topamax. I guess it works best if you don't have a weight problem. It made food taste different to me to the point high calorie foods were no longer palatable. It actually made me eat better and crave cold water. Therefore I lost weight. I wish luck to those who are taking it specifically for weight loss therapy.
I was just prescribed this today by my doctor and have about 110 lbs to lose to get back into the healthy weight. My doctor made me aware of a very rare side effect of Topamax. She said that in very few cases it has caused Glaucoma to form in the eyes. She made me swear if I noticed ANY changes in my eyesight I would immediately go to my doctor. I wanted to put this out there because I read at least one response of someone stating they had blurry vision.
I was given Topamax for seizures. I lost about 40 pounds. I didn't know that one of the side effects was weight loss. But u will lose large amounts of weight. Hope u can deal with the tingling in ur hands and feet though. Good luck.
How long did it take you?
It took almost 2 months. I took a high dose. I lost slow for the first 2 weeks then about 8 lbs a week until I stopped it. The side effects are terrible. If u decide to start it get a higher dose snd don't stay on too long.
What dose were you on and what dude effects did you experience?
I've experienced the tingly feeling and blanking out sometimes.
Side effects lol stupid phone
200 mg.
What was your starting weight and how much did you lose?
A little about myself: I've been skinny... skinny ALL my life until about 8 years ago when I started taking steroids for terrible allergic reactions. During the course of taking those steroids, I put on a whopping 70lbs! I subsequently came off of those steroids about 6 years ago, and the MD said it could/would take me at least two years before the weight started to come off (even with diet and exercise). In addition, I also suffer from Bipolar disease, which has required two additional medications, both of which cause what??? Weight gain...
Needless to say, after being 5' 9", 125lbs, and a size 4 ALL my life, up till I was 37, having these extra 70-75 lbs on me has made me feel unworthy, disgusting, isolative, depressed, and kept me out of all intimate relationships.
That being said, I finally approached my Psychiatrist in Feb of this, about four weeks after being on my own healthy diet. I had lost 13lbs on my own, but it just seemed to me, I should have lost more, especially during the first week or two. I informed him I was very concerned about my weight, and he subsequently took me off of an antidepressant that was working very well for me, and put me on Topamax 25 2x/d x 1wk, then 50mg 2x/d x wk 2, then 100mg 2x/d continuously. Needless to say, I was VERY concerned about him taking me off of my Abilify; that antidepressant had taken me out of the depths of hell 3 yrs ago...
Okay... long story a bit shorter. Phew... LOL
During week one and two, I didn't see much of a change, then kaboom, my appetite went bye-bye. Since Feb, I've lost an additional 25lbs, bringing my total weight lost to 38lbs... that, and I'm a size 8 again!!! Woop woop!!! The main side effects I feel would be the tingling in my extremities and occasional dry mouth. Both of which I can easily manage.
I did have to return to my Abilify, the antidepressant which caused me weight gain, but at 1/4 the dose. I took a HUGE, mental nose dive about 5 weeks ago, and my family MD immediately put me back on, whilst keeping me on the Topamax. To say he was displeased with my Psychiatrist for taking me off of it would be a slight understatement... It has slowed my weight loss slightly since being back on it for 3 weeks now..( Instead of losing 4lbs/wk, I'm down to 3lbs/wk... No big deal) For me however, without my mental health, I can't possibly have physical well-being..
The best of luck to everyone out there!! Remember, even on Topamax, when we eat, we still need to eat in a healthy manner. Get your protein in... Maintain your hydration and electrolytes... and please take your Multivits.
:-)
Wow we have so much in common!
!! I am also on abilfy and could relate to being skinny my whole life until put on the stuff which helped me tremendously except being asked every other day if I'm pregnant; ( I'm 30 years old 5'7 and a 190 pounds I'm on a 100 mg and haven't lost any weight yet but have noticed I'm always thirsty and it has helped curb my appetite. When does the weight fall off?
Hi Tbell...
The weight started dropping off when I finally got to 100mg twice/daily = 200mg/day. After going back on Abilify, I did notice the weight gain slow slightly after about three weeks or so post dosage start, and my MD subsequently upped my Topamax to 125mg twice/daily.
I noticed you said you were on 100mg, but you didn't mention if that was in total, or twice /daily... If it is once/day, for ME, I didn't notice ANY curb in appetite until I reached 200mg/day. That said, all our bodies react differently.
I wish you all the best!!!
I'm on it once a day and it is helping curb my appetite. All my fat is in my stomach which I hope to lose. If I don't lose I think I might ask doctor to take me off ability :(
I KNOW about fat in the tummy region!! That is where I held the majority of mine. Wow, we have a lot in common. I swear I looked 8 months preggers. Now I only look 2 months preggers :-) LOL
One HUGE suggestion I can give, is to take extreme caution in coming off your Abilify. You're on it for a reason, and probably a good one. The Topamax "should" counteract the weight soon. If it's curbing your appetite, you should be seeing weight loss.
I don't know how long you've been on the Topamax, but it did take a few weeks for me to start seeing the weight loss, and about 5 weeks for it to be be rapid. That said, my dose is much higher than yours... Take note of that; it does make a huge difference. Moreover, due to the severe depression I regressed back into, once I started back on my Abilify, I had to increase my Topamax dosage by another 50mg.
Just a couple things to think about for your weight loss journey and before you consider coming off your Abilify...
Thanks for the positive feedback. I been on it since March 26 you know I just read so many quick results lol abilfy has helped me tremendously I just hate the weight gain!!! ; ( I hate getting dressed in the morning and picking out clothes! Especially I get c mad because of how I use to be. I wish I could post a picture so people could see what I'm taking about. I'm going to stay on the abilify and continue my topamax. I'm on the generic topirmate do you think that matters. I Also have been working out 5 days a week to help speed up the process but nothing really. Thank you for writing me back it gives me hope :) :) :)
OMG... You've hardly been on it for any time at all... You're being wayyyy too hard on yourself, and maybe expecting a bit too much out of a 100mg dose in addition to the Abiliby you're taking. Can I ask how much mg of Abilify you're on?
It's only been two weeks sweetie, so it should start soon. As I said earlier, it didn't start for me for 2-3 weeks, and even up til now I don't exercise (not so proud of that, but true).
Oh... I also take the generic... I don't think it makes any difference, or at least it hasn't for me.
I'm on 10 mg of Abilfy. Your probably right! :) I take to 50 mg pills in the morning. I also have 100 mg pills so when I run I will start taking them. I don't drink soda any more it taste flat. Do you watch what you eat?
Hi Tbell.. I definitely watched what I ate in the beginning few weeks, and still do to a degree. At this point though, it's just hard to watch what one eats when you don't have an appetite to start out with. I don't think it healthy to share how many calories I eat/daily, but I do ensure I eat my protein, fruits and veges. Also, due to my 2.5+ liter/day of water intake, I also drink a gatorade a day to replace any electrolytes a may be losing.
In the beginning, I still craved the occasional sugar and carb... my FAVS!!! But those cravings are gone altogether now.
I too am bipolar ! and would like to know which antipychotic you are taking because my dr has me on latuda and the weight gain has been awlful. I need to lose 50 lbs. please help. thank you
Yes Yes Yes it works!
I lost 95 lbs taking topamax !
I tightened up the first time i took it !
It made me unable to eat sugar at all because i got severe diarrhea if i ate any sugar at all.
It also took away my hunger.
It works .
yes it works!
OMG... CONGRATULATIONS MeWseeee!!! Hoorahhh!! Yippeee!!! Good going gal!!
On a more serious note... lol
Can I ask what dosage you were taking, and for how long before you lost the weight?

Looking forward to hearing from you and your answers to my questions!! Again, congrats to you!!! Liz
How many milligrams were you on and how quickly?
I actually have been on this for a year and I was perscribed the medication for my migraines. I can say that I had about 20 extra pounds from my last child that is now 6 and I lost the baby weight and then some. I'm thinking of getting off of it due to the fact I weigh less then I did in highschool which I have always had a high metabolism so I have lost too much. I had a few side effects when starting the medication like tingling in my fingers and toes and food and carbonatnated drinks tasting like pure carbonation. They lasted a few months then I got acclimated to to the medicine and it did go away. Just some info from my experience...
Hi everyone! im not sure anyone will be able to give me feedback, as it sounds like you are all new Topamax users, but I used Topamax (pretty sure it was Topiramate made by TEVA) and I lost about 25lbs in about 2-3 months. I took myself off it because of the insane side effects but the weight loss and appetite control were amazing. In 2013 I started taking it again for about 3 months. I lost some weight and my appetite did decrease again but the weight loss was nothing like before. I started taking it again last year in March and I feel like my appetite wasn't nearly as controlled (although it wasn't out of control anymore either) and I worked out 5-7 days a week. I did lose some weight but once again it wasn't like my first time on it. Now I'm about to start taking it again (this time the non-generic Topamax brand) and I'm hoping to see some weight loss results.
Have any of you noticed that the results are COMPLETELY different the second (or 3rd) time around? I won't continue the drug if I don't lose weight... Mostly because the other side effects nuts... But I wanted to get feedback from others.
Hi Haley, i'm just curious as to what the dosage was that you were on? I wasn't prescribed it for weight loss but I wouldn't mind losing 10-15 pounds.
Hi Krystal! I started on 25mg at night for a week and literally started noticing a difference in my wright within a couple of days. After a week I took 25mg in the morning and then again 12 hours later at night. I took at 7am and 7pm. After that prescription was up I was prescribed the 50mg to take one at morning and one at night. I couldn't do it. The side effects were too much for me so I started cutting them in half and stuck with 25mg twice a day. I lost the weight very quickly. But I lost my hair even faster...
Wright = weight lol
Hi Haley, thanks for the feedback! I haven't seen any side effects yet but it's only been 5 days but fingers crossed. I weighed myself this morning and I was a little less than when I started it but who knows, my weight fluctuates up to 5 pounds daily. I would like to get down to 125 but if not no biggie as long as it helps for what I am actually taking it for!
Yes!! I tried it again for migraines and nothing in the weight loss dept!!
Hi everyone!
Great dialog on this topic. I was prescribed Qsymia for weight loss, but my doctor just prescribed Topamax 25mg due to the lower cost.
Qsymia is made up of Topiramate/Phentermine but is way expensive. Only 2 weeks on Qsymia I had to stop taking it because of the dopie-side affects (now I assume is coming from Topamax), And the Phentermine caused my blood pressure to go up. However, I definitely had less appetite and was encouraged that a pill could actually help with my weight loss.
I want to try going on only topamax for weight loss in hopes I have less side affects.
I can assume I will feel dopie/stupid for a while - Does that eventually go away?
My dosing is 2 x a day @25mg. No special time to take it - but I like the routine haleyd had, 1 at night to start, then increase to 2 a day. What side affects did you have? You noted that you had crazy side affects when increasing the dose, I'm hoping that if I stay at 50 mg a day, I can have manageable side affects.
Thanks for the support!
I'm starting Topamax this week for weight loss. I need to lose about 70 pounds. I'm using this to jump start my weight loss. If I can drop about 20 pounds I hope to have the energy to start working out regularly.
I've tried most everything else out there - Weight Watchers, NutriSystem, diet pills, fad diets. I hope this works. My doctor is also starting me on a Paleo diet. I really hope the Topamax gets me to drop my Coca-Cola habit.
I have been on Topamax for headaches since June of 2015 , now it is Feb. 2016 and I have not lost any weight... What am I doing wrong, I need to lose 40 lbs. so I can get off this sleep apnea machine , all this medicine dose is make me sleepy as and feel drugged and take my short term memory away.
Hi All.. I have only been on Topamax for 1 week, and maybe it's psychological, but my appetite seems to be increasing. I've been on a diet for 5 weeks, and I've only lost 13 lbs. Hence, I went to my psych... and asked him to take me off of my Abilify for Bipolar and change me to something that didn't cause weight gain. I've just increased today to 50 mg twice/daily. I don't know if that will change my cravings for sweets, but I certainly hope so...
I do suppose I also need to increase my own willpower, and throw away all the sweets in my cabinets, but I only have a couple there because I "was" allowing myself one treat every two days. Now, I seem to be eating a treat two to three times/daily... Arghhhh...
Any advice or suggestions on my dosage or if this will change would be appreciated. Thx in advance!
UPDATE: Hi all... I am now up to 100mg twice daily and the weight loss has been amazing!! My appetite has completely gone and my cravings for sweets is nil. I no longer drink coffee as it simply tastes awful and only drink water... and that I go through about a 2-2.5 liters/day due to my dry mouth. The only side effect I seem to have is the tingling in my hands and feet, and that is manageable. (well, along with the dry mouth). I've lost 20lbs in a month and cont to keep losing... Another 40 to go!!! Good luck to all!!
Yes it feels like I drink at least 6 liters I can't get rid of my dry mouth
Hi,
I noticed that also but going into week 2 in did change. I hope that helps
I take 2 100 mg of Topamax daily for Nerve Pain.. Prescribed by Pain Mgmt Doctor for my Fibromyalgia & L4 & L5/S1 Herniated Disc that is pinching the S1 Nerve.. I began on 25 mg 1 X daily... However since May 2015 - Present (Jan 2015), I have an 46 lb "Unexplained" Weight Loss... No Change in Diet, Excerise, Etc... I do not recall exactly when my dose was increased to 100 mg 2X daily, but almost positive it was after MRI confirming the Lower Back Disc Herniation in December 2015. I also suffer with RA, Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Panic & Anxiety Disorder, PTSD, Nodes in Both Lungs & Chest Lymph Nodes... So 99.9% of my time I spend in my bed, where I am most comfortable for my back and for my "mental" well being, its my own little "safe zhaven" so to speak...
So now this 46 lb "Unexplained" Weight Loss Since May 2015 & is still continuing to drop rather quickly, just lost 6 lbs in the last 14 days, leaves me now wondering about the Topamax... However, I still eat, drink my REGULAR Pepsi, 21 oz Bottles, at least 3-4 a day, with little to NO exercise, other than walking from room to room in my home... However, I DOUBT Topamax is the MIRACLE pill for Weight Loss lol. I am currently undergoing testing for MS now too. Any thoughts?? Thanks & God Bless Each & Every ONE of YOU!! Much LOVE!! ~Trish~ ❤❤
I take topamax for extensive migraines but personally I have lost almost 80 lbs on it . This medication curbs my appetite all day long . I know some people get bad after tastes as a side effect I was blessed with the tingling fingertips . So try to remember these are Neuro medications . That will alter sensations and tastes.
I used to take addipex and it was a huge success. I lost a great amount of weight but my BMI reached the point where I couldn't get it anymore from my doctor. It's taken 4 years to gain my weight back. I recently started taking it again but this time it didn't work. Today my doctor gave me Topamax. I'll start taking it tomorrow. I desperately need to lose the weight. I'm a little scared but eager.
I have just started taking this drug for migraine prevention. They tell me one of the side effects is possible weight loss and I believe it. I have had no appetite at all in the past 3 days. They also say that things like carbonated beverages will taste different and smoking will taste aweful. Not bad side effects, if you ask me. I have also read possible panic attacks when drinking coffee, word loss, trouble recalling the correct word for every day items, people and tingling in your extremeties and memory loss.
I have experienced the tingling in my feet recently and it actually hurts. They say it passes as the dose increases. My migraines are so severe and frequent that I am willing to suffer just about any side effects if I can get them under control.
I do know that you will never lose weight if you do not follow one golden rule: burn more calories than you take in. Just get moving in some way, even if it is walking for 30 minutes. Just get started. Good Luck.
I noticed that you posted your question over a year but wanted to know how you are doing and if you are still in need of help? Hope all is well.
I was prescribed Topamax for migraine control. After a few months I had lost 30 lbs. At first no one knew why. I ate whatever I wanted but couldn't seem to gain weight. I was to the point where I was looking too thin. Tests were done, but no one had an answer. They thought I might be terribly sick. Turns out being on topamax and exercising had increased my metabolism. I stopped taking it and an now at a healthy weight again. Topamax from what my docs said, doesn't control appetite, it just speeds metabolism.
