I am currently taking multiple antidepressants and have done for many many years. They include venlafaxine 225mg, Promazine 50mg, Amitriptyline 50mg and Mirtazapine 45mg. I still struggle daily with depression and anxiety and I feel hopeless as I would like to reduce my medication but the doctor feels it’s too risky but the side affects are awful. Does anyone else take multiple antidepressants like this? Thanks.
Taking multiple antidepressants at once?

I have been on multiple meds for many years. At one point, after my adult son died, I was on five antidepressants, just to keep me from crying all day. I eventually got down to three after a bit of time. At the start of 2024, I decided I wanted to cut my meds. I did not feel like they were really helping me anymore. However, my doctor didn’t want me to cut back. (They never tell you that you will be taking this crap for the rest of your life!) I finally convinced her to adjust my meds. One went down, one went up, one stayed the same. Over time, I continued to cut back with her help. When she didn’t want to cut anymore, I found a different doctor. With her, I told her my goals to get off my meds as much as I could, and that I wanted to slowly cut my meds. She agreed. At this time, I am off one med (Wellbutrin), cut my cymbalta in half, and my abilify down to a half dose every other day. I am going to hang here for a couple of months until I am ready for refills. I am looking to cut the cymbalta in half again, and cut out the abilify, but not at the same time. I am taking it very slow, and it’s working. I have a lot of support from my husband, who has been helping me get through this, as well as a group of women friends that are very supportive as well. Some have gone through the same thing with getting off antidepressants. There is a website service, available in some states, that helps you get off antidepressants. I think it was called outro. I didn’t use them, as they were not in my state. I am also considering ketamine infusions to help my depression, but have not yet found a provider I like.
Hello, I'm not going to be of much help but just wanted to send you thoughts & prayers xxx
I take Venlafaxine and mirtazapine, 225 and 15mg and lorazepam as and when. For me, I sweat buckets and want to eat. But the alternative is worse really in terms of mentally. Could you see a psychiatrist instead of GP? Or, tell your Doctor that it is what you want to do. Whenever you change medications it's always a risk and a gamble.
But, on the other hand, if you don't try you'll never know.
Good Luck.
Thank you for sharing and i appreciate your thoughts and prayers
