Last Thursday I was prescribed mirtazapine 7.5 for sleep and anxiety. I immediately quit taking trazodone which I have been on for 20 years at 50 mg. Is this OK? Should I have tapered off the trazodone or does the mirtazapine replace it? The pharmacist and my psych nurse didn't think it would be a problem. I am asking if anyone has ever done this? One antidepressant to another over night?
Switching from trazodone to mirtazapine over night? Is this OK?

I am about to do this too and it scares me. Please update me and I hope it got better.
You will be fine Tamatha2. Stay in close contact with your doctor. In my opinion mirtazapine is far superior to trazodone.
Hi Pff. I am sorry you're not feeling well. I was fortunate. The switch was relatively easy for me. I remember having some mild aches and pains but within a week I was so much better. I was able to sleep and eat. Mirtazapine was a life saver for me with zero side effects. I am now hoping to ween off of it. Hang in there. It gets better. If you don't notice an improvement in a week talk to your doctor. Please keep me posted and know you're not alone.
I am doing the same. On day 3 of switching. Not feeling well. Palpitations, dizziness, hot flashes, agitation an head aches with a bitter metallic taste in mouth. I want to just stop and go back to trazodone, but I need this for weight gain. I feel miserable. Don't kno if I should continue. But, I will keep trying I guess. Just wondering... when did u start feeling better? Or did u? Really looking forward to your answer.
Hi, Charlie! From the literature on trazodone:
"Do not stop using trazodone suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to safely stop using this medicine."
Perhaps being on such a low dose you wouldn't have discontinuation symptoms... I guess you'd know by now if you were going to.
Regards,
Curious Wildcat, would suddenly stopping trazodone for 3-4 days cause a rebound effect on chronic migraines and cluster headaches?
Hi CharlieBugz, I don't feel that it would be a problem switching over! My psych doctor has done that with me! Mirtazapine is a good sleep aid... I was on 15mg. I just went off the drug because I couldn't stop eating (which is one of the side effects). Doctor put me on Diazepam for sleep & muscle relaxation. Overall, Mirtazapine is a good anti-depressant!
Take care & sleep better
Thank you for responding. The Mirtazapine worked good for sleep the first night. Now I am taking Ambien with it. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't go through trazodone withdrawals by stopping it so suddenly.
