Can benzonatate be used for a sore throat?

I have a sore throat, but I am not coughing. I was just wondering if it would help my throat?

Does Benzonatate make you loopy like a narcotic cough medication or just sleepy like Benadryl?

Can you use Benzonatate after the expiration date on the bottle?

And if it is over a year old or more, is it safe to take. It does not smell nor look bad and it has been in a dark cabinet.
