I've been on Lexapro 10mg for five days and I just want to eat all the time. Even when I'm full, I crave food, especially unhealthy food. I'm conscious of my weight and I know that weight gain can be a side effect of taking Lexapro - I REALLY need for this not to happen. Is there a way to curb these crazy cravings and keep my weight down?
How can I stop food cravings with Lexapro?

I have the same issue! Glad im not alone.
As I said earlier, Sarah, I gained 20 pounds on Lexapro. But I didn't realize at the time that it was the lexapro causing me to gain weight. My stomach was bloated and I craved carbs all the time. Then when I realized what was going on, I was actually relieved, because when I quit taking it, the carb cravings and the bloating went away. I've dropped every bit of the weight I had gained while I was taking it. Wellbutrin SR proved to be the right fit for my situation. No weight gain. I guess partly because the wellbutrin alleviates my anxiety with the least amount of side effects. Lexapro is notorious for the above mentioned side effects. And I wasn't impressed by the results when it came to relieving anxiety either. Hope you feel better soon.
Thanks for your reply! My stomach didn't get bloated at all and my cravings and appetite seem to have settled. I'll be cautious of my weight and calorie intake and take this into consideration if I do gain weight. Glad to hear that you found something that worked for you in the end :)
Let me try again: I said I had stomach bloating. That's not entirely true. But I did have carb cravings. My stomach (abdomen) got bigger, because when I put on weight, it all went around my middle. So, rather than abdominal bloating, it would be more correct to say that I packed on the excess weight around my midsection. Sorry about that.
That's okay, thanks for clarifying!
The best still is give the Lexapro a good try and if gaining weight too fast let the doctor know and try something else. But while you are on the Lexapro watch more of what you eat.And try and get some exercise as you start to feel better.
sarah; as always im with WCV she put just what I was going to say and just because it says weight gain does not mean it is going to happen, If you notice it do as Wcv HAS said and normally it well keep you about where you are. But if it does become a problem let the doctor know and there are many other meds that are more weight neutral type meds where you don't gain or loose that much you could try so just keep your eyes on your weight and see what happens first.
Thanks a million for your reply, this put me at ease a bit!
Wow! I thought WCV was a male till I read this last comment by Chuck, lol!
That happened to me and I would call your doctor and tell her to get you off it IMMEDIATELY. I took it for my mood swings and depression and over the course of a few months, I gained 30 pounds. And I started working out and eating right but NOTHING could stop the cravings. It does not get better, it literally gets worse and worse. Because of the weight gain I still have self esteem issues, it honestly made me feel worse about myself because of the weight gain. It's been a year since I've been off of it and I still haven't lost all the weight. I lost 15-20 pounds after I stopped taking it but it took a long time.
I gained 10lbs on Effexor and lost it within 2wks of tapering off.
Hi Emily, thanks for the advice. Were you giving in to the cravings and eating a lot of unhealthy food when you were gaining weight?
no for the most part I was eating healthy foods and I even got a personal trainer but calories are calories. Trying to control my cravings for food became more of a problem than my depression and mood swings. The medicine was not worth it in my opinion. I ended up switching to Lamictal and that helped so much and I didn't have craving anymore.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad to hear that you got it sorted out in the end!
Hi Sarah. I gained 20 pounds on lexapro and my blood pressure went up as a result. After discussing this with my doctor, she suggested Wellbutrin. Good luck.
Hi, again, sarah! Because of the multiple ways (most) antidepressants effect our metabolism, our endocrine system, our hormones, serotonin receptors, etc. ~ and this is why they work for depression and anxiety ~ we can't just wish weight gain away or do anything to prevent cravings.
As with any reason for weight control a low carb/low calorie diet combined with vigorous exercise will help prevent excessive gain.
Try loading up on lots and lots of water and low calorie snacks between sensible, small portioned meals.
Remember that only some users will gain weigh, but if you're packing on pounds that go beyond vanity into the realm of unhealthy talk to your doctor about a more weight neutral medication ~ if there's one appropriate to treating your illness.
Good luck, WCV
Hi WCV, thanks again for the great answer. Do most people gain weight on Lexapro? Could I stay on it and come off as soon as I notice weight gain? Will it affect my metabolism forever? Sorry for all the questions, these answers are worrying me - I know I'll be more depressed if I gain any weight.
Sarah; the weight gain does not happen to everyone. And no it does not change you Metabolism even if you have to stop it and try something that is less chance of weight gain please don't worry and when you start it do some of the tricks to your body like extra water to make you feel full And just keep on eye on your weight and what you are eating. Start some good walking etc but what or if this is to happen it well not be forever just while your on your medication
Actually, in the clinical and field trials Lexapro only barely barely surpassed the placebo meaning you'd be nearly as apt to gain weight with a placebo than Lexapro. But overall, about 25% of antidepressant (all types) users experience some weight gain although mostly clinically insignificant. This means your jeans may feel a bit tight but you aren't going to have a heart attack or need to run off and join the circus.
As my good friend Chuck says, any slight amount of weight will melt off if and when you stop the medication under your doctor's strict supervision and it will have NO residual or lasting effect on your metabolism. You'll be just like you were before.
PS, Since I tend to underweight I'm THRILLED with the idea of some extra curves and hope that I'll get some one of these days!
Great comment; This really helps when to many negative post show up, No matter what we are talking about there is always some that well gain weight and not always just because of the new medication. But it's always good to leave it with the positive note. Thanks WildcatVet great Job Have a great weekend. CHUCK1957
Thanks so much for this - it makes me feel a lot better! I have recently lost a lot of weight so I could probably do with putting on a couple of pounds too,
Also, as a side note - my cravings have calmed down and I'm not as constantly hungry any more. I had actually lost two pounds when I weighed myself today. Feeling more positive now so I'll see how it goes!
Most of the feedback I have seen online about Lexapro has mentioned weight gain. I think that this is because I have been reading a lot of discussion forums which people, presumably, are more likely to use if they have a negative experience. The fact that only 25% of people gain weight supports this. Interesting!
