Why are staph and other infections a special problem in hospitals and long-term care units?

Because these bacteria breed best on people who have their immune systems effected by illness and age. Nursing homes first got mrsa because hospitals were sneaking them in without telling them. Now, its just every where and all we can do is try to avoid carrying it from one patient to the other. These bacteria were created because people want to take antibiotics for every little sneeze and the bacteria developed resistance to it.
