I’ve been taking sertraline (Zoloft) for a month now and after two weeks I felt my social anxiety completely go away, I no longer had extreme overthinking and I was so confident, this lasted for a week. Now I’m back to my normal self. Is this normal? Will I start to feel good again? Is it possible for it to be less effective one day and then not the next. Ive increased my dosage from 50mg to 75mg today so I’m hoping this helps. But just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them?
Sertraline - When will it balance out?

Hi, Keelie!
Yes, it's something that some people experience in the first weeks. We call it the "roller coaster effect" and it's normal... it's just your metabolism adjusting to the medication. One day or week or two you feel great and then BAM! you feel like you're back at square one. It'll straighten itself out soon.
Sometimes after a dosage increase some folks will have new or recurrent side effects and one of those might be a mild increase in anxiety. Don't let that alarm you... it should resolve quickly.
Thank you for your response.
I’m just worried because I’ve never really been a bubbly and outgoing person and always wanted to make lots of friends but I’ve always been socially anxious, after three weeks on the medication I was bubbly happy and talking to everyone and I stopped over analyzing things and stopped caring what everyone thought of me. I finally felt like I could be me.
But this has gone and I’m over thinking everything again and fell self conscious, was this new found confidence, happiness and social me just a placebo ? Or was that actually the medication working ?
I really don’t want to go back to the old me
Keelie,
I know exactly what you mean because I was also the "old me" for a good chunk of my life. Thank goodness for medications and therapy! You'll get there too... it's just a matter of perseverance and a little effort.
Really, try not to worry so much because that's what treatment is for... to stop that constant anxiety.
Look for positive improvements and don't dwell on what you see as negatives and setbacks. If you get yourself through this initial period you'll see what I mean. :)
