I am currently taking 40mg propranolol twice daily but not feeling much of an effect from it. Also I am taking 10mg citalopram but looking to stop the medication with approval from my local gp. I am wondering if the propranolol will reduce the anxiety from coming off citalopram as I have not successfully got off it and tried many times. I used to take 20mg but it made me very lethargic and paranoid with uncontrollable angry outbursts...
Is propranolol effective for anxiety ?

Jonathan, Just as Janie has said Propranolol normally is not used for just plain anxiety, But it well helps symptoms of anxiety. This is also very commonly used on people that have a fear of giving speeches or playing music etc in front of crowds with great success. As far as your Citalopram really the people that have the hardest problems coming off do it over a long period once you have the okay from your doctor you could cut the pill up with a Gem razor blade it's a one sided razor blade very sharp so stores carry them but it you have trouble go to a hardware shop it's also the same as we use to scrape paint off windows etc. Anyway and take 1/2 of what you are now for 2 to 4 weeks and then drop it to the other half and do the same thing then go to every other day. I know it is a long time but you will have more success.
Hi Jonathan-
Propranolol is used for the physical manifestation from anxiety, your heart pounding. It is a blood pressure medication. It does not treat anxiety but can help one of the symptoms.
You may want to talk to your doctor about Buspar which may help with the anxiety as you come off Celexa. It is non-addictive but takes a while to build up in your system.
Hope you find options that will work for you.
