I was just at a dermatology appointment and was prescribed Spironolactone for my acne. I have Factor 5 Leiden so I can't take birth control. When my doctor was telling me I should try Spironolactone she said that I cannot get pregnant while taking the drug. I took this as I could use it for birth control, but after reading some things on the internet it sounds like you're just not supposed to try to get pregnant while taking it. I will be taking 50 mg a day.
I'm really hoping it can be used as a contraceptive because being only 17 without being able to take birth control it makes my sex life a little stressful for my boyfriend and I.
Also, if this drug can't be used as a contraceptive, are there any birth controls I can ask my doctor about that aren't hormonal?
Thanks!!
Is it physically possible to become pregnant while taking Spironolactone?

This drug is NOT a contraceptive. Like KM states, there are many barrier methods that you can use that do not have hormones. I used a diaphragm. Hormonal birth control isnt the only option out there-they are just the most popular. You might even think about Paragard, the copper IUD which can be used for 10 years! No hormones.
You aren't supposed to get pregnant when on it, its not birth control. Here's the only answer I had to birth control when I was 17, NO. Its cheap and you always have it with you. There are barrier methods, see a gyne about it.
