Normal saline doesnt have a lot of salt in it. It is balanced to be just like the body's own natural fluids (like your tears taste salty, fluid within a blister is salty). Salt is an electrolyte that is needed by the body. When a person is dehydrated and needs fluids, they often use normal saline. If they used plain water, it would wash out important electrolytes. The other fluids available for IV use have Dextrose added ( like D5W which is 5% Dextrose and water)so that would be bad for him with diabetes and elevate his sugars so saline is the right choice. So no worries! They are doing the right thing for your uncle! Good question though!
The saline will help to dilute his blood and help bring his blood sugars down as well. Many people with very high blood sugar levels need this hydration.
Yes, there are times the dr would order it. Ordinarily you would not eat much salt, but normal saline is called that because the amount of salt in it is compatible with the human bodies salt.
