My 19 year old son is very sensitive to meds. He has been suffering with anxiety, OCD, bipolar, and a mood disorder. I sent him to a mental hospital for 6 days. They put him on trileptal 900 mgs. Which was too strong. He instantly had a headache. And has been suffering ever sence.when he was discharged, I started weening him off slowly. He is completely off of the med. But he is still experiencing these side effects. It's been 5 days with no med. Why is it taking so long to get rid of the lasting side effects? He can't concentrate, and when he tries he gets this headache. And can't think. Help!!!!

Hi, Deb! Headaches and chills are the most common effects of withdrawing from Trileptal. All of the drug and it's metabolites have a very short half life of 2 and 9 hours respectively meaning the medication will
be basically out of his system at about two days after the last dose. The residual effects should resolve within a week or two at most and no permanent damage has been done. The effects will also become less severe with every day that passes.
Since I assume that his doctor gave him a long dosage reduction schedule to follow let her/him know that your son is experiencing these headaches and get some professional advice, okay?
Best regards to you both.
You should NEVER stop or wean off psychotropic drugs without a doctor's consent and supervision. It only makes the side effects more severe. Please call his doctor ASAP.
Thank you so much for responding. He's literally panicking thinking that these residual side effects are never going to go away. I keep telling him it will take time. But he's scared..
We have talked to a doctor.. And they said the same thing as you said. But my son still experiences it. Hipper focusing on it. I offered a smidge of adivan and my essentials oils to calm him. But he refuses the adivan.
Assure your son that doses of Trileptal, as much as 1200mg to 2400mg/day are commonly and safely prescribed. His underlying anxiety is probably getting the better of him at this point ~ perhaps his doctor can prescribe an anxiolytic to get him through the next few days. Continue to assure him that this only a temporary setback.
Sorry about the time warp going on with our posts!
Thank you so much for your response. I will tell him. Poor kid, he's so scared. And swears off any more meds at this point. I keep trying tho.
And I'm offering him adivan, like a half of one. But he won't take it. He took that in the mental hospital every day. Didn't like it at all but knew he needed to cooperate or bed have to stay longer.
