For the past week I have had a terrible burning sensation in my stomach after eating, nausea and even gagging/vomiting. Making me feel miserable! The GP has given me omeprazole - anyone tried this for acid reflux? How long does it take to work?
I have taken it for two days now and had to leave work this morning due to being sick.

Lucych; Just as the ladies have said, Omeprazole is really the drug of choice for acid reflux from more doctors than about any of the others, Just take it exactly as directed by your doctor. If you have problems at night put an extra pillow to help prop yourself up some. But you should feel some results by now, And as was already said watch what you are eating. If you continue to have problems after a week or so check back with your doctor. Just to see what else you could take with it, Or to try one of the others but for many depending on how bad it is all conditions are different, But you might have to stay on it for awhile or have some more test done and make sure that something else is not going. Hope you have a good weekend.

Lucych I use to suffer from daily burning of both my throat and my stomach. Also, it could be the middle of the night, no food for hours yet I would wake-up/sit-up in my bed with this terrible "fire in my throat & gut". I tried all the GERD meds that my doctor recommended. The Omeprazole DR 40 mg capsules did not work alone. It wasn't until my doctor had me on a combination of both Omeprazole & Carafate. It was very important that you took the Carafate on an empty stomach. Why, I'm not sure but it was? Also, you had to take the Carafate four times a day. One hour after the first dose of Carafate I took the slow release Omeprazole. It was this combination of meds that got rid of that awful "fire" I suffered from. Because this combination worked my doctor diagnosed me with a peptic ulcer. Today, I still take the Omeprazole every morning. Also, I have had to make some bland diet changes.
Hope your feeling better soon! bestpup

Yes, it worked like a dream for me. It says to take it for 14 days, but as soon as the 14 days were over, the reflux came back. And it was BAD. I mean, it would go up into my sinuses bad. The paperwork says to finish a 14 day cycle then not do it again for another 3 months, but I went to my Doctor and asked if I could just stay on it indefinitely, and she said absolutely and wrote a prescription for it so I wouldn't have to pay an arm and a leg at the drug store. I think it took me about 3 or 4 days for things to completely calm down, but once it was gone, it was gone. Definitely try to limit your spicy intake if you can, and think about what acidic foods you're taking in - the big one being tomatoes (even pasta sauce can do you in).
Sorry to hear that you're suffering so much! Here's hoping you'll find relief soon!
