I got my implant February 12th. I was on day 4 of my period. I went on to have my period for an additional 2 days like usual. No bleeding until March 6th. I bled my 6 days. When my period was over, I started experiencing brown discharge or maybe blood... Not much, but enough to need to wear a thin pad. On the 19th of March, I started another period. Ended 5 days later. That being said, from March 24-current (April 14th) I've been non stop experiencing more brown "blood." Sometimes it lightens up and I think it's going to stop, then it gets dark again.
If my boyfriend and I have sex, I start bleeding actual blood for 30minutes- an hour, then experience brown blood again. I don't know if I have a problem, or if it's normal. I haven't seen anything about bleeding brown blood for a month or even longer really at a time. Only for a couple of days then it stops. Should I be concerned? Also, is brown blood or discharge considered "spotting?" Or is spotting just mainly a little bit of pink/red blood?
Nexplanon - Is non stop brown blood or discharge normal?

I’ve been on the nexplanon for about a month now & I’ve had continuous spotting. My gynecologist said that you can also take the pill for about a week while having the implant to help stop the spotting. I know it’s a bit late but just something to think about if you’re still experiencing it!
You don't really have proper periods on the contraceptive implant. You have what's known as hormonal breakthrough bleeding, commonly, until your body adjusts to the artificial hormone.
This breakthrough bleeding is common with many artificial hormonal contraceptives, especially progesterone only contraceptives, such as the implants & injections.
For many people, this stops as you adjust. For me, the bleeding didn't stop doing what you're experiencing, so I came off it after a year.
In March of 2019 will be my 3rd year with my implant to be removed. Going on the last two month I've had random horrible cramping following the brown bleeding. The whole almost 3 years never 1 period which I personally like. Now i dont feel to crazy since its not only a me problem.
Can someone please answer. I’m 16 years old and got my Implanon inserted almost exactly 3 months ago (7/7). For about maybe a month i hadn’t had any bleeding whatsoever, thinking I was one of the lucky ones and then all of a sudden I started to get small amounts of brown discharge, within 2 months it appears to be getting heavier and projecting some sort of yuck smell. I’m also getting my normal period, it’s just much darker. The brown discharge gets very stringy and has been very persistent. If someone’s had any experiences with this, has it stopped over time? Is it worth me just getting it removed? The cost of removal isn’t an issue
I got my implant put in on August 3rd on my second day of my period and I had my period for 4 days. I got my period again on the 20th of August for 11 days. I’ve had the brown spotting for 2 weeks now that started on September 13th and it seems like once it’s really light and about to end, it keeps going. I’m not sure if this has happened to anyone else? Can anyone relate and has it stopped for them completely?
This is a question, not an answer.
It happened to me & i stopped using the implant after a year of it.
I tolerated the same thing for a year before I accepted that the implant was not going to suit me.
It's a case of waiting to see what happens. It's up to you how long you give it.
I am so glad to see this thread. Mom of 3. 2nd nexplanon/implanon. I'm due to have it removed Jan 2019. Ive had it for almost 3 years. Anyone experience brown discharge, cramping, moodiness before its due to be out? It has been heaven for me so far. No periods, no cramping, no mood changes. Perfect birth control. But the last 2 months... very very light brown sometimes red discharge. I started to drive myself nuts wondering if the bloody show was in my stool. Just wondering why it went from perfect to this. Anyone?
Ladies, whilst I’m not happy we’re experiencing this I can’t express how happy I am to have come across this thread which has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders that this was just happening to me - it’s made me feel like I was going crazy.
I’m on my third implant now (first two were implanon followed by my current nexplanon). The odd discharge symptoms I’ve been having for almost 18 months now, convinced something must be terribly wrong with me and too scared to see GP in case there was anything wrong.
I’m so glad my implant is due to be removed soon I really want to see if this horrible side effect makes a disappearance.
Fingers crossed!!
I experienced brown blood for a while, now it’s a pink/red color (FINALLY!) but my period length hasn’t changed it’s still maybe a week or so when it actually stops then comes back. This along with me having many different hormonal changes is all I’ve had. Have you had any other symptoms?
I have had nexplanon for a year and 2 months, at first I have normal monthly periods, they got lighter and lighter, then stopped. Now I will have a heavy one for over a week, then I’ll spot for a few days, now (not to be gross, I just don’t know if it’s normal) I have very dark brown, almost black, this blood. It’s very concerning. It’s been going on for like 2 weeks now. It’s light, but enough that I have to wear a liner and it freaks me out. I’ve never had blood this dark or cloth and thick before. Has anyone else experienced this??
For anyone wondering, I’ve got my nexplanon in May 15, 2018 and I was on my 3rd or fourth day of my period when I got it in. I usually last 5-6. But the next day it went down to brown spotting and ever since I have been spotting. Not ever enough blood to go through my pants but I always have to wear a panty liner. I haven’t had any significant changes. The only thing I notice is maybe being more prone to being emotional. Like movies I’ve never cried to before, i cry to now. That’s it. Other than the stupid spotting, it’s great.
Hello. I know this is an old post just hoping someone replies.
I am 26 in 2 weeks and on my 2nd implant. I had the first removed in November 2016 due to the bleeding constantly and after 2 years I had enough. I had to go on minipill as there is history of blood clots in my family caused by the pill. I only have 1 fallopian tube after an ectopic pregnancy when I was 19 so I wont get the coil. I fell pregnant on the minipill after taking it religiously and miscarried. I decided to give the implant another go and got it in Sept 2017. I never get a regular period. I bleed randomly. Sometimes for a day sometimes 1 week. Sometimes it is fresh blood but majority of the time it is black brown discharge. After sex I will bleed the following day. Recently I have had really bad headaches and my whole body is aching. I am finding myself online and as usual diagnosing myself with the worst possible illness that any of my symptoms suggest.
Has anyone else had the same problems that has been solved by removal of the implant?
I feel like I am ready to remove the implant and let nature take its course. I have been on contraception for 9 years now and feel it may be time to come off it altogether. Would appreciate anyones thoughts please xxx
Hi, I am about the same age and have been on implanon/nexplanon implants for almost 10 years with similar symptoms for the last 18/24 months. First couple of years I bled non-stop, then it died off and the last couple of years I’ve had the dark/old blood discharge issue.
Did you have yours removed in the end and did the symptoms improve at all? Mines due out in a couple of weeks and I’m desperately hoping it will stop the discharge. Getting to the point now where I’ve been putting hormones in my body for almost as long as I haven’t. I can’t take normal pill/injection etc either due to family clotting history so implant was one of few options available. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fab contraceptive because the side effects make it difficult to actually have sex but I’m so ready to give it up now and would love to know if you saw any changes afterwards?
So I’ve had mine since 16 April and had my first period on my normal date of May 1st and ever since then I’ve been spotting sometimes it’s red but mostly it’s brown and it smells bad is this normal? and will the spotting stop?
I am currently experiencing this
Started bleeding 03/16/2018 till now
05/01/2018
Super dark blood
I'm so over it...
But per my sister in law who had it for 3 years she spent most of those 3 years non stop bleeding(uuuugh)
I have been on Nexplanon for about a month and had a period for a week or so. But had sex and started bleeding again . Now I’ve been having this brown discharge not that heavy but enough to wear liners . Just wondering how long will this last because it is very inconvenient I rather just get on the pill again . If this doesn’t settle or be done with already , wondering if anyone else’s had stopped since I am in the first month and trying to be patient. Since I’ve read that spotting for the first two months is normal . So I guess I’ll wait until next month to decide
