I stopped feeling benefits of Sertraline after 10 good years & my psychiatrist added 7.5mg Mirtazapine. Started to sleep well, even felt less anxious & depressed, after 10 days started to feel bad again, so he upped dose to 15mg. Within 2 days felt much better, but now feelng a bit anxious again. Is this likely to continue until it really gets into my system? Feeling myself again and then waking up feeling anxious & depressed. Very disappointed but I'll carry on regardless!

Hi, feline! Sorry that it seems your sertraline has pooped out on you... it happens commonly after long term use. Mirtazapine is great for good sleep which is very important but it can take several weeks for the effects of an increase to become therapeutic. Your anxiety and depression may do a roller coaster number for a couple weeks. You might want to give it a little more time for your metabolism to adjust to the new amount of the medication. If after that you're still having breakthrough symptoms talk to your doctor again. There are a few more good options to try if it doesn't work out well. Best wishes and I hope you're feeling better quickly.
Perhaps I'm being too optimistic as I felt great yesterday, not so today. I've been on 7.5 for 4 weeks & 15 for only 2 days, seems I will have to wait!
Thank you for your reply
Now 6th day taking mirtazapine 15mg plus 200mg Sertraline had 3 days when I felt better, but today anxiety through the roof, then, calmed for a few hours, enabled me to do chores, now bad again! How long should I stand this till I contact my psychiatrist for help.? It is like a roller coaster, impossible to make plans or do anything constructive! Not a happy bunny atm!
You should always contact your doctor when you're having problems with your medication(s) for professional advice.
Give them a call and describe what's happening with you exactly like you did here so they know what you're going through.
Take care!
I am now on 22.5mg mirtazapine and sertraline 200mg. Just entering my 5th week on mirtazapine. On the whole my anxiety is less, and depression too. But I'm still getting days when I feel down & a bit anxious, spoke to my doctor & he advised staying on doses I'm on. Does anyone know if I should give mirtazapine more time to take full effect? He seems to think I'm OK, but I get discouraged when I get bad days!
I'm trying to come off Mirtazapine. My anxiety & depression has increased & I feel terrible, on 37.5. It is NOT for me, I feel worse not better. My psychiatrist is finally listening to me so I've reduced dose by 10%. He wants me to try Venlafaxine, but am terrified of trying it. I will have to come off sertraline too, that's scaring me too! Am in a very bad place atm.
