I've been prescribed Metronidazole and instructed to take 500 mg pills three times daily for 10 days. I'm currently on day four of taking this antibiotic. I know that to mix with alcohol is not a good idea. However, I will be going out tomorrow night with some friends who most likely will be doing a bit of drinking. I am also one who enjoys to drink. So my question is this: Is it safe to stop the medication for that day so I can have a few drinks later that night? Is that a bad idea? Will it cause a bad reaction since the medication has been in my system for four days even if I take a break for that one day?
Metronidazole and alcohol?

Let me tell everyone right now. DO NOT MIX ALCOHOL AND METRONIDAZOLE together. I had to take two pills every day for a week and on my third day into the medication I forgot I was on the antibiotics and drank two beers, so later on I was not able to sleep the whole night and woke up at 6 am and that’s when the hell started because every negative side affect of the medication hit me at once I had diarrhea while I was throwing up nothing but stomach acid and the metronidazole for about 4 hours so I had to lay in the bathroom. Then I began to have a rapid drop in blood pressure and an increased heart rate causing me to feel tingling through my hands and head that made me feel like I was beginning to lose feeling. Then I began to shake and have hot flashes on the floor. This is the sickest i have been in my life SO DO NOT MIX THESE OR YOU ARE IN FOR HOURS OF HELL.
How long did you feel these side effects. I was taking the medication metronidazole and I had one Friday morning then that night I had a beer and wine and didn’t feel sick the next day. I didn’t take them the next day Saturday because I was going to an event that I knew I’d have a drink. I had 2 mixed drinks with vodka and Jose Cuervo. I’m not an usual drinker but I had those 2 drinks Saturday night I got a headache that night and had a hard time sleeping but felt ok the next day until the night time I started having lots of nausea and a bit of diarrhea. I hadn’t taken the medication but I still feel really sick. Can it be from the medication and mixing alcohol the previous day? Can you please tell me how long/ days hours these bad side effects lasted? Thank you
Had this for 2 days and smashed drink for New Years had no side effects at all just got drunk as usual haha didn’t feel any different
I'm taking 400mg 3 times a day for a skin infection on my face resulting from a tooth abcess and I've had no major side effects from drinking on these meds. It's Christmas, and I have to admit I've been drinking a lot. The alcohol is hitting me a little harder than usual, and the hangover is worse than normal, but there are no serious side effects. That said, I wouldn't want to endorse it because it goes against medical advice, I would just like to reassure you that a couple of drinks haven't done me any harm. Make sure you eat when you take them, though, they do make you feel sick on an empty stomach
I'm a 47 year old female, was prescribed Flagyl 5 days ago. I'm 5'9" 120 lbs, social drinker, 400mg 3x for 10 days. I had a concert scheduled for over a month so I did all my research on this because, who the hell wants to go to a concert stone cold sober? I started with one beer, waited an hour, nothing, so had a second beer, nothing. Switched to wine and though I got way more drunk than I usually do on this amount, I was fine and not too hungover today. I skipped last nights dose just because I was too tired to take it. So I think it's up the person.
I'm 31 and have been a consistent drinker for about 10 years. About a 6 pack minimum 3 to 5 times a week. I'm on flagyl 500mg 3 times a day for a cdiff infection i got after antibiotics for a spider bite that left mrsa and cellulitis on my arm. I was afraid to drink starting this medication 4 days ago because of everything I've heard so I avoided it. Tonight my wife and I drank a couple at a restaurant and I got a strong 6 pack of stone arrogant bastard. I'm on my 3rd one and i feel no difference. I actually feel better than the lack of alcohol lol. I even took one flagyl at the right time just before starting my 6 pack. No ill effects. I'm not saying there shouldn't be a bad thing happening or that I will be drinking consistently after tonight but I am saying for me at least there is no side effects.
Neal; for most you would get like the Antabuse effect but to a regular drinker Flagyl keeps the medication longer in your kidneys and liver so you have to be very careful not to do any more damage. if you can try and finish the medication then return to your normal choice just use caution while on Flagyl its really for your own ggo. have a good evening. chuck1957
So what you are saying is it may not be affecting me physically on the outside but on the inside it is destroying what keeps it alright?
Neal yes but it is not affecting you like it would many people but don't know with more alcohol it make start and also even if it is not affecting you it would be a good idea for you and the amout of alcohol you do consume regularly it would not hurt to have your liver checked or like a full blood check from time to time to be safe. I myself would rather know I have the start of something and try to adjust myself than find out when my liver is shot. But you have not had any problems to this point using these together and you should finish the medication but enjoy your weekend with your buddies. at least keep the medication say on hour then drink and be aware. have a good trip. please think about the blood test chuck1957
Ok. Yeah I was gong to get my cholesterol checked tomorrow maybe I can ask for extra tests. By the way the only thing that happened last night from drinking was I got drunker off less than usual.
Neal; that is great so when you go into the doctor's office just say something like Doctor on this blood test I just have not been feeling right for a while could we do a full blood panel on me and check my liver and thyroid etc. One reason is most have a hard time talking about alcohol with the doctor because some treat you different but they have a medical review that we should all have our blood tested in your age group because back then prior to HIV or the MAIN THING THEY ARE LOOKING FOR IS HEP C WHICH WAS UNTREATABLE BUT nowadays THEY CAN CURE IT. AND THE MEDICAL GROUP RECOMMEND THAT WE ALL HAVE A CHECK UP FOR THIS NOW WOULD BE A FANTASTIC TIME. I WISH YOU THE BEST AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE LET ME KNOW HOW IT ALL GOES. I HOPE YOU CAN TELL I TRY NOT TO JUDGE ANYONE WE ALL HAVE OUR VICES. AND ALCOHOL IS SO EASY TO GET THAT IT IS HARD TO PASS IT UP. AND EVEN MORE SO ON HOT DAYS THAT ME ANYWAY. SO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SAY WHAT YOU WANT. IT GOES NOWHERE FROM HERE. I HOPE ALL OF THIS HAS HELPED YOU SOME. ENJOY YOUR DAY MY FRIEND. CHUCK1957
I know I googled this a hundred times before I just tried it. I read mixed reviews some said it makes you sick some said it was a myth. I was on this med for 7 days I took my last dose at 8 am this morning. I am drinking at 7pm and just fine. No sickness nothing. I know the pill itself can cause digestive distress so my opinion is it effects everyone different. For me I had nothing I'm good.
I was perscribed the same dosage and also worride about the effects of alcohol with the medication. After reading that different people had different reactions (some had none at all) I decided to go ahead and see for myself. On day four I went out and had two beer and for a while felt fine. About 2.5 hours later I started feeling very uneasy and went to the bathroom twice with diarrhea. Not too long after that, I threw up and was so weak that once i got into bed I immediately knocked out. Tossed and turned all night with a stomch ache that contined into this morning. Still havent tried eating yet but I will definitely not be drinking anything on this medication!
Metronidazole and alcohol are not a good Idea Yes we are all different I even had customers that could take their Antabuse and go next door and drink for many hours with no reaction. But anyway the main thing to think about all of you the doctor or the Pharmacist don't tell you not to drink to spoil your weekend it partly you can get very sick or not sick at all but what you're missing is you don't have to turn red throat swell up, throw up, and all the other fun stuff.. But what is this combination doing to your organs as in Liver, Kidneys etc. So please be more than careful. have a good weekend. chuck1957
I have been taking this pill for 5 days to treat bv and I'm on I think my 7th glass of wine and no side effects. I also drink regularly but I haven't drank in over a week. I think everyone will be okay... but I guess everyone reacts different.
I am not telling anyone what to do and want to go ahead and say that meds affect everyone differently but here is my experience as a 100lbs female.
The night before I started my twice a day 500mg prescription I drank at least 4 shots of tequila and brandy. I have drank the same amount for the 3 nights I have been on it as it was my friends birthday weekend and have not gotten violently ill or thrown up. The worst Ive felt is constipation and it is better after the bm lol.
I try to take the meds earlier in the day and I always take it with food. (7am and 12pm usually with some type of meat) I don't drink until after 6PM at least after my last pill of the day. I read all the horror stories but I also saw a few that made me feel brave enough to "try" it and personally I am happy with the outcome so no I wouldn't stop but playing it safe is never a bad choice.
Hi, i used to work in pharmacy and we always warned people about drinking alcohol when dispensing Metronidazole. The pharmacist always warned that if you even were to eat a sherry trifle you would get very sick. I don't know if the interaction is this severe, but i certainly wouldn't take the risk. Previously i have read that you should wait 72 hours after your last dose of medication before consuming alcohol...
Thank you very much!
Only just seen this post and I thought people should know about metronidazole ,I was taking this 10years ago for infected gums and alcer and was told not to drink,on the last day we went to a friends for a meal and had forgotten to take a dose on the Friday because left them at work so on Saturday picked them up and stupidly took an extra pill!! At friends meal I never drank alcohol but had a sherry trifle then had second helping!! .omg at 3.00 am I woke up and room was spinning out of control and I was terrible sick, and my wife called an ambulance ... I thought my time was up I felt so bad!! Paramedic said I was having a bad reaction and I was taken to hospital were I stayed for 2 days.. after this I started getting terrible panic attacks and anxiety was through the roof!! I was ill and off work for 6 months and taking several meds to calm my system.
I never had any of these problems before this I am told I’m the post laid back person on the planet!! So 10years on and still taking medication and can get anxiety very easy and have other strange thinks that happen to me like severe fatigue after exercise... So anyone wanting to drink alcohol with this medication DONT!!! ...
Literally the same thing happened to me as Delila. I was not told to avoid alcohol i had 1 beer after the dose was finished. I was immediately ill and shaking, vomiting..etc. i was out of work for 3 months and vomited everyday for 2 months. I wouldnt give this medicine w/ a drink to my worst enemy. after 12 years it still haunts me..
NO and the reaction you get mixing these two is like taking antabuse and alcohol together do not drink not a good idea this medication well still be in your system. Also you don't want to mess up your level skip the drinks you well be sicker than a dog.
