I was on Xanax for over 30 years. I changed psychiatrist and my new one let me set the pace for weaning off. Since you are on 0.5, it shouldn't (hopefully) be too hard. When you are ready with the doctor's oversight, you would drop to 0.25 and stay there until your body accepts that. Or instead of take 0.5 once a day, switch to 0.25 twice a day and when you and your doctor agree you are ready, drop one of the 0.25 mg. Keep a close eye on your anxiety/panic symptoms and if they worsen, return to 0.5 until you are ready to try again. Since I was on 1 mg 3 times a day, the process took two years of trial and error to succeed. To help, your doctor may choose to add a non-benzo to ease the anxiety effects. Tell your doctor you want to wean off Xanax and, if necessary, switch to something non-addictive. Good luck.
Really Good advice.
