I have severe anxiety and panic attacks. I feel like I'm going to freak out. My skin is crawling and my chest is tight. I have no patience and am in desperate need of something to calm me down. I have general anxiety, but this is different. I can't function when I have one of these attacks. It is completely disabling. I can't get in to see my pysc doc for awhile so I went in to see my primary doc today and he prescribed Klonopin .5 mg twice a day. I took the first dose at 4pm with no results, and so I took another at 6 or so, still I don't feel a bit calm. I would like to know how well this med works for others, how long it takes to work, what dose you're on, etc... Thanks!
How long does it take for Klonopin to start working?

It is now a little past 9pm and I am finally feeling much calmer. Yay!!! So I am wondering now how often I should take them. Says twice a day. Do I have to take it consistently or just as needed? My panic attacks have been really bad recently so I realize I should let it build up in my system for the full effect, but I don't want to have to be on it long term if I don't have to be... If I do have to be, I guess that's ok too, but anyway... If anyone can let me know what they think I would appreciate it...

In addition you might want to ask your doctor about Visteral or even Benadryl. Both have helped me in the short term. They might make you tired but usually starts working for me in 30 to 45 minutes. Klonopin did work for me but it does take awhile. Benadryl is over the counter, Visteral takes a scripe. If you can't wait acouple of days, ask your doctor about the above. Inderal also helped me and is not habit forming, it also doesn't knock you out. Hope this helps. I know I had a hard time waiting for relief those attacks are terrible. Good luck. Just know that there are alot of us out there that can understand and feel what you are going through.
Thank you franklin8905. I do take benedryl sometimes to help me fall asleep.
I have generalized anxiety and bipolar depression as well as taking 70 mg of vyvanse in the morning prescribed by my psychiatrist and I've tried many anti anxiety medicines. I've had multiple anxiety attacks so I was started out in visteryl and it was like taking a placebo but I guess it's different for everyone, and xanax was good for the anxiety attacks but it wears off quickly. In my experience with klonopin which I've been on 1 mg 2 times a day for over a year has been wonderful. Yeah it takes a bit to kick in but it's got a much longer half life than xanax. You may also want to ask your doctor about buspar because my sister takes it and it works well for her. Overall get your info so you can ask your doctor about what he thinks would be best for you.
Vyvanse is for attention deficit disorder. Is this what your practitioner is treating you for? Drug class for vyvanse is a stimulant. I also take klonopin and I was recently prescribed the disintegrating tablets 2 milligrams each and I haven't seen any faster absorption even though it disintegrates and I use it under my tongue hoping to get faster relief. Does seem to also give me heartburn or a burning sensation in my esophagus and behind my breast bone. My new neurologist wants me to stop taking the Klonopin and begin to take Valium but I don't like the way valium makes me feel floaty and dizzy. The climb up and doesn't do that to me. I was also on Seroquel for my mental agitation that cause me insomnia and it helped immensely but the neuro doesn't believe in it. He says seroquel and actually interrupt normal sleep patterns, but I slept well when I was taking it. Anybody else had anything like this.
I take Klonopin 1 mg 3 x day and if I feel my chest tightening and can't breathe I was told by a dr to melt it under my tongue as sublingual which helps take effect at least 10 minutes sooner... i did that and it worked within 20 minutes. I feel so much better. It may not work for everyone but it definitely helped me from feeling as I was having a heart attack. I hope I can help someone else feel better
I've been on Vistaril for more than two years maybe longer for extreme anxiety and panic attacks. It is light sedating but I wouldn't say it's not necessarily rabbit forming. I honestly don't know how I would go without it but understand that no you don't feel like you need another one and another, like beer in a bottle. I overdosed on Klonopin and was hospitalized. As for Xanax again I was hospitalized then too tried to continue to take it but it gave me excruciating nightmares, shaking, high blood pressure and worry.
Klonopin is not a fast acting benzodiazepine such as xanax. The nice thing about Klonopin though is that it is long acting. Once it builds in your system, it will continue to work nicely. Give it a couple of days, if you aren't experiencing any relief, contact the doctor and let him know.
Ok, that is good to know. I do need something that is longer lasting- I was on xanax before. That's prob why the doc prescribed the klonopin instead then. So I will try to relax and give it some time. Thanks LaurieShay.
I take 1mg of kolonipin as needed I have ptsd and bipolar disorder my panic attacks are very bad my question is how long does it take to kick in please reply Terri norris
I take klonopin daily. It takes about an hour to hour and half to kick in when I take as needed.
Hi i am so desprate i have to be at work soon i took a 2mg klonopin its been 20 mins i kind of want to take my boyfriends xanax on top i just want releif.
I hope you didn;t decide to do what you suggested in your comment. Yes, Klonopin and Xanax are in the same category of drug, but not interchangeable and you can take too much.
I take klonopins and it takes a while to kick in maybe an hour to an hour 1/2
After that I get a mild headache
Does anyone if it's normal?
LaurieShay Im sorry to let you know that your wrong about Klonopin being a fast-acting drug like Xanax and Ativan. It's actually quite opposite. It takes an average of 3 hours to reach is full blood plasma level and therefore have a full effect on the person taking it. The good thing about Klonopin though is that it has a much longer Half-Life then the quick-acting shorter lasting benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Ativan. That's why many professionals prefer to use Klonopin on a regular basis at least 2 times a day every day. Where as Xanax and Ativan and the like are usually only prescribed for short term PRN otherwise known as as needed medications for quick responses to extreme anxiety. Klonopin though shows a much higher success rate when use daily for longer periods of time to keep control of such disorders as generalized anxiety, social anxiety and even OCD.
But since it is a long acting medication you can build up a therapeutic blood plasma level which helps these and many more disorders over the long run. Xanax, Ativan and even Restorill are not approved for long term use. This is one of the reasons that klonopin is commonly used long term on an every day basis. Short acting Benzos should never be prescribed for long term use, as their effects ware off quickly with a return of anxiety usually much worse than before. So I'm sorry to say Laurieshay but it's really important that you know what you are sharing on a site like this. I'm not sure if you have a degree, but imagine someone in a server panic attack and after reading what you wrote took a klonopin or two. Not only is that not the first line treatment for Panic Attacks, but it could cause severe preparations and they may even pass out, especially since they are expecting quick relief which klonopin is simply not made for.
I think my first statement was that Klonopin is not a fast-acting benzodiazepine. I did explain it correctly.
I take it 3 times a day but it is different doses. It only really works at night. Cause of the dose. I wish my doc could switch it to xanax
If you said clonazepam has a slow onset of action you are correct. I'd agree it probably does take around 3 to 4 hours for blood levels to top out, depending on the individual. It's an ideal medication for "Generalized Anxiety Disorder". You're looking at a 18-60 hour half-life with this drug. Which is long-acting compared to the alternative high potency Benzodiazipines, such as alprazolam and lorazepam. However, clonazepam doesn't produce any active metabolites of any consequence. So compared to a diazepam or clorazapate it's half-life is far shorter. When clonazepam is given for GAD with panic attacks most psychiatrist will prescribe a little alprazolam for PRN, responsible doses of alprazolam should be within the 0.5 to 1mg range, possibly in divided doses to avoid daytime somlolence. -J.S.
