When I was using Voltaren, and I stopped because it didn't help, I was using 4 grams twice a day, that was prescribed by my Ortho doc, and couldn't go over 8 grams a day, I used it long term also, and my Ortho doc never said anything about a time when I had to quit, it was unlimited, just had to stop before surgery, or something else that had to do with no blood thinners, I was using it on multiple joints, but it never helped, so I would guess you can use it for long term, but not over a certain grams a day, it's very specific about that on my prescription about it, I would also ask your doc for they're recommendation on that, you don't want to use to much because it is a blood thinner, hope this helps a little.
Prescription strength Voltaren gel has just been released as an over the counter medicine. My Dr never said anything about just short-term use, so I'm thinking you can continue to use it as long as you follow the directions and don't use it more than directed. I tend to ask my pharmacist these kind of questions. They're often more educated about medication than evenyour Dr. Plus they have your medication records and will be able to make sure there are no bad interactions.
