That’s a great question, and there are some different opinions on it. The general consensus is it takes 4-6 weeks to reach a therapeutic level in your body. I know that’s a long time when you’re suffering from GAD, but this drug is altering chemicals in our brains and that isn’t like flipping a light switch. I know when I started on it back in 2001, it took about a month before I started to feel it working. I also had some gradual dosage adjustments, so that is something else to consider. My opinion is a lot of people give up on this medication prematurely because it isn’t a rescue drug like Xanax. You don’t notice it working for awhile. For me, one morning I woke up and my anxiety was finally “in the back seat” and wasn’t driving my life any longer. I noticed I just felt calmer, and after a few days other people noticed I was honestly, just calmer. My whole perspective on life relaxed. I do know from experience it helps to evenly space my doses out throughout the day because Buspirone has a short half life and does go through the body pretty quickly. Everyone is different, but don’t give up on it quite yet. I hope this helps. Good luck to you!
