I have anxiety disorder and have tried many different prescriptions over the years, usually giving up because of extreme exhaustion and weight gain, only to go back to try new medications. The only one I found to have worked for me was Xanax however since my doctor doesn't want me to use it for every day, we are currently trying to find something else to work. I have tried Klonopin, Zoloft, Paxil and Buspirone. Now I am trying Lexapro. I am very worried since I have been reading on this site how Lexapro causes anxiety. I am trying to get rid of my panic attacks and anxiety not cause more. Not sure what to do. I'm desperate for help. I should mention that I am 55 and am post menopause.
Lexapro - will it help or make my anxiety/panic disorder worse?

I am 62. Post menopausal as well. Try to get through this. Things will improve. Try to set boundaries if you have insight into what triggers your anxiety. Deep breathing yoga meditation helps too. This is something I am doing now. News blackout. Not denial but things are so toxic and pathological I have to say no more.
Thank you!
Who told you that Lexapro causes anxiety?
Lexapro is one of the few medications that helps both depression AND anxiety. That is why I take it.
I'm surprised that Klonopin didn't help with your anxiety. It did wonders for me by helping me get a good night's sleep. But, now I've switched to trazodone because it is less additive.
If you've tried all those other medications and they haven't helped you, you may want to see a new psych-doc. I'm sure there is a med, or combination of meds, that will get you some relief. You just have to find it and stick with it. But, before making any changes, I really think you need to stick with Lexapro for at least two months to give it a chance.
I Googled side effects for Lexapro. That's where it said it can cause anxiety. Also, the reason the other medications didn't work for me is they made me feel exhausted and I gained weight with all of them. I guess they worked for my anxiety because they made me too tired to function. Thank you for your advice.
"Psychiatric
Common (1% to 10% of users): Abnormal dreams, agitation, anxiety, nervousness, restlessness"
Here's another example of why "head meds" are an inexact science.
Can you think of another medication that might exasperate the condition it is intended to treat?
Do we have cold meds that make your cold symptoms worse?
Are there pain meds that increase your pain?
Cholesterol meds that increase cholesterol levels?
Psych drugs are very tricky.
We need to communicate with our doctors and follow their advice.
@Wiley.
It's too bad so many people "know better" than their doctors... usually because they "read it on the internet". Often times it's not even "scientific" information but the non-professional opinions of those who "know better".
No wonder there are so many people suffering needlessly because they're so much smarter than their doctors and so don't need to consult with them or follow their advice.
You nailed it.
Hi, pretty!
Unfortunately, most if not all, antidepressant/anxiolytics may cause a few users some increased anxiety when initially starting the medication:
"Common (1% to 10%): Abnormal dreams, agitation, anxiety, nervousness, restlessness"
But as you can see this means that 90-99% of people won't have this side effect despite what you may have read.
The good news is that should you experience this it generally only lasts a week or two. Very few people need to stop the medication and Lexapro's reviews are very positive for effectiveness.
I took escitalopram for over 7 years and it was a life changer and I don't recall any problem with increased anxiety. Even if it had caused it it would have been worth it to stick it out for the results I ultimately got from the medication.
Best regards and I hope it works as well for you.
Thank you!
