SSRI’s don’t do anything for me but make me more anxious and depressed. My doctor is suggesting Lamictal. I am struggling to get through each day.
Any thoughts? Thank you
Can Lamictal help with ruminating thoughts? I have OCD, PTSD, anxiety and bipolar depression.

Hi, Itstime!
I am also taking Wellbutrin (an atypical antidepressant) and buspirone (anxiolytic) which were relatively effective, but when we added Lamictal to my "cocktail" it made a huge difference especially for depression.
I hope my experience with this medication is helpful for you.
Thank you. That is encouraging. Why did they add lamictal for you if you don’t mind my asking.
No, I don't mind at all. I was not too long ago diagnosed with Bipolar l and started trials of several different medications. None worked particularly well for my depressive episodes so my doctor added the lamotrigine (Lamictal) which is good for that and also has been shown to be helpful with anxiety disorders.
Before that I was treated with SSRI and SNRI medications for Major Depressive disorder and anxiety disorders but they provoked the manic episodes (did work well for the anxiety though).
If you have other questions or concerns always feel free to post again, okay?
Thanks. You are very kind. How would you say the lamictal helps you? I have so many issues that I am not sure anything will help. I am older (62) and never needed anything until I experienced trauma 3 years ago. Ssri’s have caused suicidal ideation which is very frightening... I want to live just not like this. Thanks again...
I would say that the Lamictal has been helping primarily for the depression but my anxieties have pretty much responded well to buspirone so that hasn't really been an issue. I was barely able to even leave my house because I would have panic attacks just thinking about it... almost the only time I went out was for my psych appointments and to see my therapist. Now I'm even driving again!
Don't think you'll never feel better... you will... but it takes patience and the courage to keep trying. I'll be 65 soon and I've been on medications since I was a teenager. My needs have changed along the way but I've always ended up with the right combination of meds. Some people don't care for the thought of having to take medication but after trying without them a couple times I'm just fine with having a happy, productive life now because of them.
Be patient and stay strong. You'll get better if you just hang in there!
Thanks for the encouragement. This is all so new to me. I can’t seem to stop thinking about some of the awful things I did during a manic episode. I hurt people... not physically... but in other ways. I need something to stop the thoughts. This was all caused by trauma. Thanks for listening...
No problem! Have you ever considered therapy? CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) has helped me learn how to cope with intrusive thoughts and how to deal with them. Some amends you can make if you've hurt people but some things you need to just let go of and talking it out is very helpful.
