Hi all
This is my first post, so I hope I do it right. My question is can I use Prilosec OTC for longer than the 14 days the package says. Last summer I developed a condition where I have indigestion after I eat. Prilosec seemed to take care of it. In November I quit taking it and the syptoms returned in a few days. I began taking it again and within 3-4 days the syptoms eased up. About 7 days ago I ran out again and the syptoms promptly returned. I bought another box and will start again tomorrow.
Everything I read says to only use this product for 14 days and not to repeat for 4 months. My doc doesnt seemed to be too concerned that I am taking this product this long. As a side note my 80 year old father-in-law has been taking this for over a year with his doctors blessing. He quit once and his symptoms returned
Does anyone have any info to share regarding this. I would really appreciate it
Thanks
Is it OK to take Prilosec long term?

I have been taking Nexium since it came on the market, and changed to Prilosec or Omeprazole as they where cheaper and cured my heartburn and acid reflux, I have been taking them every morning ever since they where on the market, Nexium was prescribed by my physician they where in 40mg capsules, when I went to France I got them in 40mg pills and cut them in half, now I can by Prilosec in 20 mg, I have been taking them for over 15 years and had no side effects that I know of, I'm 83 Years young and never have heartburn or acid reflux again, that is if I keep taking them every morning. Even though it works for me, I would strongly recommend you asking your Physician for his advice.
I've been on prilosec for over 20years, my reflex is too bad to stop it and my reflex causes ulcers. I have no side effects except I do have a slight osteoporosis, but hey, I'm 70 yrs old, would I have had it anyway? My Dr checks all my levels including vitamins every year. More importantly, your symptom of having problems after eating is exactly the same symptom I had when I had 4 ulcers. You may want to check that with a gastro Dr, but since the prilosec cures ulcers, I'd keep taking it until your symptom is gone. I'd be worried about what caused the ulcer tho, if you have reflex you'll have to take SOMETHING to feel good. Another drug may be good for you but nothing else helped me. I hope all becomes well with you.
My Dr said that it's just fine to take Prilosec on a daily basis if needed as long as you're under the care of your doctor, but if you are buying them OTC over the counter , you're not supposed to take them no longer than 14 days & if the problem still occurs you need to see a doctor because it's okay to take them as long as you're under the care of your physician my doctor prescribes them to me on a monthly basis to take one a day as needed ...
Wow, I was on it for absolutely nothing. I had no heartburn nor Gerd. They say it was to protect my stomach from ulcers? Anyhow when I saw that it linked to my low vitamin d amount I decided I wanted to stop. I felt it necessary strongly it took me 3-4 or more tries but I did not give up I told myself I'm just gonna let the pain happen cause it will eventually stop and I was right! The pain stopped and now I am completely off that drug. However I will take it once in a great while if needed but that's like once in a year! I am very cautious about how much I take and happy I stopped it as about a year later I saw how it is so bad for you, linked to kidney disease! I was so happy I was done with it. I took a prescription kind not otc so I took 40mg. I pray that I stopped in time.
Good luck
I was told the same thing by my doctor 20 mg Prilosec though wow 40 mg is a whole lot but my doctor said the same thing how about protecting my stomach from ulcers she said to protect my stomach from ulcers would you help from the pain and the only thing I had told her was my stomach was nauseous every morning I just listened to her and I have been taking a Prilosec and it has helped with the stomach aches but I still don't know what's wrong with me and I'm so glad I seen this because I had no idea that it was bad for your kidneys and all the other things wow finally find something that will help with your stomach and it messes up something else and the doctor don't even let you know SMH
I have been taking Omeprazole, the SAME as Prilosec, for over 12 YEARS. It stops ALL of my acid reflux, and I have had NO SIDE EFFECTS!!! I buy a 1 year supply on Ebay for about $35 from a US Seller with free shipping. Why ANYONE would buy Prilosec for what they charge is beyond me. But, I can tell you that Omeprazole works, and it is CHEAP!!!
I have been on them 8 years strait. DO NOT do that to yourself! I am only 39 and very healthy, worked out my whole life and I am starting to have major issues. Extreme stomach pains, weak hips, major bloating. These things are NOT to be taken lightly. My fathers wife was on these for 4 years and her stomach ruptured and she had to have her intestines put back together.
Do some research at ALL of the issues this leads to. Like I said worked out everyday of my life now im crippled every few months. Getting off of them is near impossible it takes 6 - 10 months of slowly making the pills smaller and smaller. There is a ton of research out there now, look it up, these things are bad news long term! I dont take any other drugs and my insides are broken at this point. Dont take these long term, they are NOT made for that no matter what your doctors are telling you. They all told me, ohh yeah they are fine, now they are like, you better get off this now!!!
No I'm a patient who is involved in a class action suit against the maker of this drug. I've been taking PPI's for over 10 years, on a daily basis. I now have Chronic Kidney Disease, which was caused by taking every day and long term. The company knew this and withheld the information to both doctor and patients. Read study regarding Kidney disease On JAMA February 2016.
What other medications have you been taking along with PPI's, and how old are you. It doesn't mean that your PPI's caused this condition...
Trust me, they are creating those problems. Do some real research they are finding long term use of this is extremely bad, leads to cancer, stomach problems, osteoporosis because your body doesnt pull in any nutrients. My B12 level is at the floor right now. Really Bad to use long term. And getting off is nearly impossible!
Could this be why I have back problems? I have been dx'ed with spinal stenosis so much. I stopped taking my omeprazole because I felt I was taking for nothing major and my vitamin d levels dropped drastically! It took several tries but 2015 in the Spring of, I let the pain happen and amazingly it went away in a few minutes! I was free from this crap! I was on prescription strength once daily. I'm so scared now. I'm so sorry you have this from omeprazole intake. God bless you♡ and Goodluck
I asked my Doctor the same question in regards to taking Prilosec beyond the 14 day instruction period on the package. He is a very highly regarded Internist. He says it is completely Okay to take beyond the 14 days,The reason it says this on the package is to protect the Drug company from Lawsuits if a person has a bad reaction while taking Prilosec beyond the 14 days(most people in the off chance of a reaction to it know just to quit taking if there are problems).Like I said its just to protect the company from potential Lawsuits, but yes its okay to take long term. The only potential problem that might occur if you quit taking is that Heartburn comes back and usually pretty intense, but say after 6 months of taking regularly try to stop gradually and see what happens, you can always go back to full dose if needed. But Yes no real danger of taking beyond the 14 days prescribed on package.
hi there prilosec i've been on it for several years so i guess if you can stand the dry mouth and occcational runs my personal experience has been good, i did switch to protonix for economical reasons and that works good also a combination of nexium and antibiotics are used for 14 days at a time for ulcers but i have been taking these drugs for more than 9 years now safely but all drugs do different things to different people i feel good with it its just so expensive they were 8 dollars a pop when i started them inquire about similar drugs in the same class but inform your doctor for acid reflux its a managed condition hence the everyday applies good luck :)
