Instructions for docusate sodium stool softener say to not take it for more than 1 week unless directed by a doctor. Does that mean not to take it on 7 consecutive days or is it safe to occasionally take it once or twice per week over a longer period of time? Normally I seldom need it as long as I take my daily dose of psyllium fiber, but now and then I experience an extended period of very uncomfortable constipation and need several doses of the softener spread over a 2 or 3 week time period . I don't want to create a health risk by taking it too often, but it works much, much better for me than any other medication that I have used for constipation. By the way, I'm 75 if that makes any difference
Docusate sodium stool softener - can you explain the instructions more clearly?

I forgot to mention that I routinely drink at least 2 liters of filtered tap water daily as well as 2-4 cups of decaff tea or coffee and an occasional soft drink, and on warm days I often drink more than 2 liters of filtered tap water. Most of that water passes through my system within a short time after drinking and may not be helping solve my problem.

Many medications cause constipation, especially opiates for pain. Docusate sodium is fine to use daily, just let your doctor know what you are using. it is also used for people with vaso vago (sp?) disease, to stop them from passing out from pushing. They use it daily also.
Good luck to you!!
I too use Miralax on top of what you use. I take the docusate sodium daily per my doctor, as needed.
I believe hey mean consecutive days. I use Miralax occasionally as you do what you use, and all is well. Hope this helps.
