Generally you can take up to 360mg per day, but docusate is a stool softener, not a laxative. So it doesn't push anything through the bowels or always produce a bowel movement. I'd suggest a laxative like bisacodyl (Dulcolax brand) or sennosides (Senna) to actually get things moving.
