As far as I know yeast infection is not a side effect of Effexor but Effexor can dry the mucous membranes and the vaginal lining is a mucous membrane and this can predispose you to Candida (or yeast) infections. Also on another note, since monostat didn't work, are you sure it is a yeast infection? Other vaginal infections can be similar. If it is, in fact, a Candida infection there are a couple other things you can try. You can call your healthcare provider and ask if he will prescribe Diflucan, an antifungal medicine, you take one pill by mouth for vaginal Candida infection. I use an over the counter approach I learned from a nurse practitioner I used to work with. She did a study on this and it is one of the most effective things I've found. I suffer from Candida infections several times a year. What you do is go to a health store and get empty gelatin capsules. I get mine from GNC. You then need to get powdered Boric Acid. Fill 3 of the capsules with the Boric Acid powder. Insert one capsule into the vagina each night before bed for 3 days. The fourth day, fill that applicator from your monostat with plain, unflavored yogurt and then insert the yogurt into the vagina. I know that sounds gross and weird but it works amazingly well! Be careful with the Boric Acid capsules though because Boric Acid is extremely poison to take by mouth!! Be sure no one mistakes the capsules for something else and swallows them-it could be fatal. You also have to be sure to follow the Boric Acid with the yogurt in the vagina. The boric acid strips the tissues and kills the beneficial bacteria in the vagina along with the yeast so you use the yogurt to replace the good bacteria-the lactobacillus that makes yogurt does this. Be sure you use plain, unflavored yogurt. You don't want any variety that has any sugar or sweetener. You can also try taking acidophillus (sp?) (Culturelle is a good one) by mouth daily to prevent Candida infections in the future. I hope this helps! Candida infections can be uncomfortable!
The same thing happen to me with this effexor and the monistat didn't work for me either. This has never happen before.
