I am experiencing significant hair loss and thinning of my hair since taking Alendronate sodium (generic Fosamax) for the last 8 months.
Has anyone else noticed hair loss with Fosamax / alendronate?

My hair seems thinner, and I had almost a plug of hair snap off in a small spot on the back right of my head. However, I thought that was one of the signs of menopause, and I am 69; so, I do not know if it is necessarily the Alendronate or the fact that I am getting older. Most of my similar age friends have thinner hair, too, and they are not on Alendronate.
I only took one dose of Fosamax and experienced symptoms the next day. In addition to bone pain, malaise, poor sleep, teeth pain and carb cravings, I also experienced hair loss. It has been 3 months since then and the hair loss continues but has slowed down a little. It helped to take a calcium supplement that contained vitamin K. This helped ease most of the symptoms. My hair loss happens over my whole head, not in a specific spot. It is scary how this medicine causes so many problems! I assume most women do not have serious side effects but it appears a small group of us do. What do we all have in common??? I take medicine for a low thryoid and have had gastric bypass.
I took fosomax for about 9 years. I started to get the bald patches after about 6 years. Since then my hair has gotten thinner and there are more and more bald areas. I stopped the fosomax last year because of all the alerts about fractures. Also, my bone density scores only improved for a couple years and then steadily got worse. I also have fibromyalgia so I thought the hair loss/alopecia was due to that. I realize I don't have a definitive answer to your question... just some input...
I took Alandronate (Fosamas) a couple of years ago and my hear thinned noticeably. It appeared as male pattern baldness does on each side of the head. So I stopped for a year or two. Then, because of pain from a T-7 caused vertebrae I started again and the same thing is happening. I can't find any info on whether it will eventually stop or slow down. I may stop again if it gets too bad. Not going to end my life bald. Too vain? Maybe, but that's how I feel.
